    About Nicholas S.

I offer 30 and 60-minute lessons to students of ALL ages and abilities! A passionate teaching artist and arts advocate, I have maintained private flute studios in Massachusetts and my home state of Maine for several years. Most recently, I worked as a Flute Teaching Artist for El Sistema Somerville, where I taught private lessons and group woodwind technique classes. My firm belief in El Sistema’s philosophy of enacting social change through music led me to pursue a graduate certificate in Teaching Artistry, Social Entrepreneurship, and Orchestral Leadership from the Youth Orchestra of the Americas’ Global Leaders Program. During the program, I traveled to Haiti under the auspices of the Fulbright Association to teach flute students at the Cemouchca and Ecole de Musique Sainte-Trinité summer music programs. Professional Performance Biography: Praised by the Royal Gazette for his “beautiful phrasing” and “bright and lively playing,” flutist Nicholas Southwick made his international solo debut at the age of 18 performing the music of J.S. Bach with the Bermuda Chamber Orchestra in Hamilton, Bermuda and has since performed in Austria, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and throughout New England. He holds awards from the Presser Foundation and the Bay Chamber Concerts (Rockport, ME), where he was recently honored with the Ezra Rachlin Prize for Excellence. He has performed as principal flute with the Trentino Festival Orchestra, the Longy Conservatory Orchestra, the Gordon College Symphony Orchestra, and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. During the summers, he has held a flute fellowship to the Trentino Opera Festival in northern Italy and studied at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, Austria. He also participated in the Kneisel Hall Young Musician’s Program in Blue Hill, ME for four consecutive summers. An advocate for new music, Nicholas has performed with the Boston Opera Collaborative and acclaimed contemporary ensemble What is Noise. Nicholas received his Bachelor of Arts degree Summa Cum Laude in music and French from Gordon College, where he was the first prizewinner of the 2015 Concerto Competition. He earned his Master of Music degree at Bard College’s Longy School of Music under the tutelage of Marco Granados and legendary flute pedagogue Robert Willoughby. He has performed in masterclasses for Trevor Wye, Rachel Brown, Samuel Coles, and Nicolas Duchamp of the Opéra de Paris.
