I'm a professional opera singer and voice instructor. I graduated with a BM in Vocal Performance from Western Washington University and a MM in Voice and Opera from Northwestern University, where I studied with W. Stephen Smith, veteran instructor of great classical performers like Joyce DiDonato, Christine Brewer, Eric Owens, and Rodney Gilfry, to name only a few.
Each voice is unique and requires specific care. Traditionally, the first half of every lesson is dedicated to vocal exercises, working to improve clarity of timbre, vowels and consonants, consistency and width of range, vocal flexibility and agility, onset and offset, and more. The second half of every lesson is dedicated to the application of these principles in a piece of music, whether it be an aria, art song, pop song, MT ballad, etc.
I want to make you become your best teacher. I want to give you the tools for good music making, so that when you don't have a teacher with you, you always have the confidence to pursue your craft and art. While it takes about 15-20 minutes to explain the principles of singing, it takes a lifetime to master them.
Let's make great music together.
Performance is my passion, and helping young singers and musicians to achieve their goals is exciting and rewarding.
The best way to grow as a teacher of voice is to know how to perform and sing. For the last few years, I've developed my talents, given recitals, studied the scores, coached, taken lessons, collaborated with professionals, performed roles, and more. Role highlights: Don Giovanni, Gianni Schicchi, Top from Copland's The Tender Land, Bottom from Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Fredrik Egerman from Sondheim's A Little Night Music.+ Read More
In this position, I was able to teach some of the brightest college students in the country, all non-music majors. Most were theater majors, some were science majors and music minors, but regardless of their field, they were able to grow as musicians, performers, and people.+ Read More
