About Nathan L.
Since 2009, I have been playing clarinet, but my musical skills do not start there. I started piano lessons when I was 5 years old and this is where I learned how to read music. I grew my love of music through elementary school and started playing recorder. After I saw how well I excelled at recorder, I choose to play clarinet in 6th grade. This choice put me on a amazing path since then. I became more competitive and would succeed in beating dozens of other clarinetist in these honor bands. I also started teaching myself piano during this time to improve my skills . While in 8th grade, I started teaching the beginner clarinetists to help improve their skills. During this time, I started taking lessons from previous principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Philharmonic. Once I started high school, I was co-principle clarinetist of my high school band. I also continued to become more competitive at honor bands. At these honor bands, I had several master classes with the primary clarinetist of the Alabama Symphony. My junior year of high school, I received my first saxophone. I taught myself saxophone during this time. My senior year of high school, I auditioned for the University of Mobile on clarinet and saxophone. I received the highest scholarship from the music department because of this audition. Starting by college career, I starting taking lessons with an amazing teacher that correct aspects of my playing I had never seen before. I was also taking piano lessons during this time and learned all my scales and a Beethoven sonata. During my time at the University of Mobile, I was the principle clarinetist for symphonic winds, wind ensemble, cross winds (wind quartet), musicals, operas, and other performances. I also had the opportunity to perform for +5000 people every Christmas season. After my freshman year, my clarinet teacher retired. During this time, I also had the opportunity to teach some of my peers in both general music classes and in one- on- one clarinet lessons. I also had the opportunity to perform with the Gulf Coast Steinway Society Orchestra. With this orchestra, I was the second clarinetist and a soloist performing Mozart's clarinet concerto. After graduating, I have started my Masters at the where I am taking lessons with a Vandoren artist and I am a teacher assistant in the music theory department.
