    About Murphy S.

I am an Electric and Upright Bass Player with a BM in jazz studies from the University of Kansas, and I have extensive experience playing and receiving lessons in Jazz Upright, Classical Double Bass, Electric Bass, and Jazz piano. Music to me is unique in its consistent ability to make me not worry about other problems occurring in my life, offer a way to express myself that is not possible through other means, and also be one of the most fun activities that I personally have ever engaged in. I seek to spread this mentality through teaching styles of music ranging from pop, to rock, to funk, to classical, to jazz, and everything in between. Having played music for 13 years, I have been taught by many teachers in many ways-and I know what I do and do not think is particularly helpful pedagogically speaking. I like to split up lessons in order to focus on different aspects of playing such as technique, developing a good ear, reading music, rhythm, and (most importantly) a heavy emphasis on playing the type of music that the student enjoys. Through an amalgam of personal and collegiate endeavors, I have been fortunate enough to perform at venues and events such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jazz a Vienne Festival, the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and many others. Also via university playing experiences, I have had the pleasure of playing with performers such Ryan Kilgore (Stevie Wonder), Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Matt Wilson, Deborah Brown, Tia Fuller, Anat Cohen, and Josh Nelson, just to name a few. I look forward to meeting you and helping you become the best musician you can be! For more information on me, go murphybass.com
