December 2005

I have a BA in music from Manhattanville College and a wide variety of performance experience ranging from off-broadway musicals to orchestral and chamber music to improvising and creating music for fashion shows and to playing and recording in progressive rock, indie and metal bands. My musical studies have covered classical, blues, jazz, rock, metal, traditional folk, musical theatre, and film music. Additionally, I have experience as a songwriter and composer and am currently recording my first solo album of original music on the cello.

As a teacher, I draw from all of the great music I've studied and all of the great musicians and instructors I've had the privilege to observe. I combine "outside-the-box" thinking with a focus on practicality and usefulness. I am an active performer, and constantly learning and improving myself, while finding new ways to share with my students.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I work to give all my students a fundamental, healthy technique that will allow them to play the music they love. I also incorporate theory, history and ear training into our lessons, and teach my students to express themselves through improvisation. Additionally, I focus on how to practice well and on making technique fun, enjoyable and helpful, rather than a dreaded nightmare. My aim is to connect mind and body & to give students an awareness of themselves while helping them develop a love of music and life.

My goal as a teacher is to give all of my students the tools they need to make the music they love. I believe in all of my students and consider it my privilege to be able to share my musical journey with them.

I am very pleased with Mike. He's able to adapt to both the beginner, bohemian style of my son and to my intermediate style. My son loves practicing and creating his own music. Mike brought how you can learn the basics, theory and essentials for reading music even in an unorthodox way of doing your basic scales. My son is motivated, captivated and shows initiative. As for me, I can read the music, put the timing in it's place but Mike has taught me how to turn playing notes, into playing music. Now I also take Cello with Mike. He's been wonderfully patient in having to break bad habits I've learned in the past from a violin player teaching me to play cello....He's given me a solid foundation to build upon. I look forward to each lesson, so does my son.Evenmoreso - - My husband is going to take Guitar Lessons with Mike. Need I say more???

Look elsewhere

While Mike was a nice and friendly, I didn't find that he was well suited to teach. He had a difficult time providing an overview of music theory. I also don't recommend taking a lesson in his home, as it was unsanitary with bags of garbage left at our feet during the lesson.I was also surprised that he could not create an E7 on the guitar, nor even find it in his book of 2500 Guitar chords. Overall Mike is nice, but scattered and disorganized, with no sense of professional decorum.
