Music teacher looking to keep busy over the summer working with bright young students eager to improve before the new school year!
I have a Bachelor of Music degree from San Jose State University in music education and have taught private lessons for the last couple of years. I have also recently completed the teaching credential program in Music and teach Kindergarten through 8th grade Music for the Pioneer Union School District. I have played the clarinet for 17 years and studied with Dr. Janet Averett for the last 4 while attending SJSU. What I learned from her about teaching is invaluable, I hope to be the inspiration and encouragement to my students that she was to me. I hope to encourage them to express themselves as well teach them good practice skills. Lessons with me will focus on not just the technical aspect to playing their instrument but the creative/expressive aspect to playing music on any instrument. After all, playing an instrument is about making MUSIC!
*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to provide for themselves their instrument, a music stand, and two chairs when in their own home. I will provide music if I can and, when at the university, the chairs and stand as well. They should also have the music they are working on at school if they have some.
*** Specialties ***
I teach General Music to kindergarten through 5th grade at Pioneer Elementary and Walt Tyler Elementary, and Band to grades 6 through 8 at Mountain Creek Middle School.
I was the long term substitute for the jazz band, teaching jazz concepts and rehearsing their concert music for about 2 months. I also substituted for the general teacher a handful of times (usually grades k-2) and the band teacher (6th grade band and 7/8th grade band).+ Read More
I was awarded a fellowship through the SJSU music education program. The position was 8 hours a week working in the band classroom. The director provided me with many opportunities to teach the whole class as well as with individuals and sections.
I ran warm ups for the large ensemble and worked with a small group of advanced students in the school's after school music program.

Mikaela helped ramp my daughter from having no clarinet experience to being a fairly proficient player ready for the school band, in less than a school year. Mikaela is friendly, points out little things that help make big improvements in my daughter's playing, and keeps checking on the basics as well (embouchure, finger positioning, etc). Mikaela has been very flexible and has a good teaching manner and attitude which has made my daughter's clarinet learning experience a very positive one. We look forward to continuing to work with Mikaela!+ Read More
Great first lesson, thx.
Mikaela is a very upbeat passionate teacher and was very warm and welcoming. I had no prior experience with instruments and I learned so much in 30 minutes and truly believe Mikaela will get me to my goal!
Mikaela was very nice and patient with Joey. Joey had a bit of an attitude going in but he ended up enjoying his first lesson! Looking forward to the next one!
What a difference a few lessons can make
Our daughter is in middle school and is playing in a band with about 20 other clarinets. At the first testing, she was seated in the middle of the pack. When she asked to take music lessons, we looked online and found Mikaela. Within a few lessons, Mikaela was able to find small things that made a huge difference. Now not only is our daughter playing better but has a lot more confidence with the clarinet as well.
Mikaela is very personable and patient. She really seems to care about our daughter and makes the lessons enjoyable. Not sure that we could have found a better instructor for our daughter!
Mikaela is a fantastic clarinet instructor!
Happening across Takelessons.com while in search of a good clarinet teacher for our daughter, was by far the easiest and most rewarding. We feel grateful to have been so lucky.
Mikaela has been EXCELLENT in every sense of the word. She comes on time to our home for every lesson. She takes her time with our daughter and teaches in a way that makes our daughter look forward to each lesson. Mikaela is extremely knowledgeable about the instrument and what she is teaching, and it shows each and every time she teaches. The very first lesson, Mikaela let us know that our daughters instrument was not working properly (we didn't have a clue). She knew exactly what was wrong with it, and we had it fixed by the next lesson. Her communication with our daughter and with us is the best it could possibly be. We are so happy and fortunate to have found the perfect match for our 12 year old clarinet player. Our daughter was recently complimented by her music teacher at school, and was very excited to hear how well she is progressing.
