I have been performing since age 7 playing classical piano in recitals with my sister. I got my first guitar at the age of 12. At 15 I was playing around town with different bands. After years of playing in garage bands, I applied to Wayne State University and enrolled in their music department. I have a variety of musical experiences to draw from which is a benefit to my students. Over the years I have done everything from playing in the local "Battle of The Bands", opening for rocker Marshall Crenshaw with my band "Café Society" and playing with jazz great Vincent York at The Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival. Currently, I prefer to concentrate on teaching and helping others, whether they want to play for their own enjoyment or aspire to play professionally.
*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you just want to play for your own enjoyment or you want to eventually play professionally, I can help. My teaching style is designed around the needs of each student. My goal is to encourage and inspire my students at every lesson and to encourage them to believe in themselves. I try to listen carefully to my students so that I can understand and help them reach their goals. After we figure out what you want to learn, I'll help you develop your skills so that you can play rock, blues, jazz or even learn how to solo. I believe that all my students have the ability to express themselves to some degree on the guitar, my goal is to help them as best I can, using my experience and knowledge of the instrument.

I have experience with beginners , intermediate and advanced players. I have been teaching for over 20 years. I have a Bachelor of arts Degree in Music. Appear on recordings and videos and I am a writer and performer.
I came to Mike with 25 years of playing experience and was expecting to grind through theory like I've done with past instructors. We jammed for a couple of minutes at our first lesson and he took it in a totally different direction, which has been amazing!!! He is so incredibly tuned in to what each individual student needs that he knew what I needed way before I figured it out. I love his approach to playing, which for an advanced player, focuses on getting ideas from your head to your fingers and I love that he teaches the theory aspect of playing, not as the focus, but as an explanation of why certain ideas work and certain ones don't. He doesn't jam theory down your throat, so lessons and practice are truly enjoyable and don't feel like a chore.
In addition to be a truly gifted teacher, Mike is just an awesome dude -- it's obvious that he loves to teach and really invests himself in getting his students to where they want to go. I can't recommend him highly enough.
Mike is an outstanding teacher. As a total guitar novice, his patience and instructional ability really helped me take small steps into a much bigger world. Between the in studio lessons and the exercises he gave me to do at home, I really feel like I learned a great deal in a short time period. I hope to work with him again in the future and would strongly recommend him to anyone thinking of guitar lessons.
My son has been taking lessons with Michael for about a year, and we are both very satisfied customers. When my son first came to Mike, he was anxious about his upcoming audition for the top jazz band at his school. Mike helped him prepare and feel more confident, and he was able to earn his place in the band. Since then Mike has worked with him on technique and style and helped him progress incredibly. Mike is a great teacher, very professional, and a super person!
Mike bares all the marks of a GREAT teacher. He knew what I wanted before I even realized that's where I truly was heading. Not only have I gained what I am seeking, but he has brought me further than I even dreamed for myself. There's no better feeling than playing the way you've dreamed. On top of being a great teacher, he not only is a kind soul, funny, and a good listener but he truly cares about your growth and what you want to learn. He is hands down an amazing teacher.
Taking it to the next level
I started taking lessons from Michael about a year and a half ago. I was in a rut and really wanted to pursue a deeper understanding of blues. The lessons we have embarked on have led me to a much deeper understanding of the theory behind what I'm doing. I think one of the biggest things that Michael has helped with is my personal confidence, especially in the arena of improvisation. I would highly recommend Michael for anyone wanting learn guitar, beginner or advanced, in a comprehensive way.
Michael is a professional
This was my first experience with guitar lessons and it was exactly what I needed to get started. With the information I was given and knowledge that I gained from Michael, I can feel confident about moving forward.
