I've been playing guitar for over 12 years & spend most of my professional & personal life doing so. I'm fluent in nearly every style of music in the Western world (as well as some from the East, such as Celtic music, ragas & Japanese traditional music).

About Alex
Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, Oud, bouzouki, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedic
ate themselves to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an experienced gigging musician in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Instrument-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Instrument maintenance
Instrument-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

We have only had three lessons with Alex, so realistically, it is hard to comment fully. However so far, my son likes Alex very much, which says a lot. Alex shows up for lessons on time. He is polite and knowledgeable. He is also a professional musician, which brings experience and depth to his interactions with my son. We plan to continue lessons with Alex.

I found Zach through 'take lessons' after my daughter had a few years with an intense classical pianist. I want my daughter to have fun and appreciate music and not feel the intense pressure she was feeling with our previous instructor. Zach was the perfect choice. My daughter loves her lessons. Zach does take time off for his professional endevors. Good for him. He has always let us know and connected with us when he returns.

I have students that are in every walk of their guitar playing journeys. The material and methods we use to learn guitar will vary considerably based on your level of ability/knowledge and age.

About Jason
Music comes from our souls and is an incredibly passionate form of expression. When individuals perform for people, including a teacher, they put their confidence and abilities and imperfections out to be seen. That's why it is important for students to feel safe and confident in their instructor, something you will find in our teacher-student relationship.

I have been teaching acoustic, electric, and bass guitar for 11 years. My passions lie in folk, blues, rock, and indie music, and I love to share that passion with my students in an encouraging and patient environment. Communication is key in a learning environment to ensure that students are working and progressing toward their goals. I have given lessons to students from age 7 through 75, and understand that each student has a unique interest and skill set to be develope
d. Music would be pretty dull if everyone was the same, wouldn't it?

I have been a singer/songwriter out of the Twin Cities for the past 11 years and have played in venues all over the world. These include coffee shops, events, and churches in Minnesota and go as far as various establishments in Guatemala. My debut album was released in 2007 and I have been a part of numerous projects since that time. I have also had the privilege of taking intensive blues lessons with Michael May and vocal lessons with Helen Lapakko.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back, patient, flexible, and caring teacher. I have experience with and enjoy teaching all ages and abilities. I like to guide students through material that they choose to work on, as long as it is within their ability. During my lessons, I will cover everything from the introductory basics, improving your technical abilities, ear training, theory, and improvisation. Time can also be taken to work through electric guitar basics involving amplifiers and effects and guitar maintenance.

*** Studio Equipment ***
None

*** Travel Equipment ***
Musical Materials, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Amp, Pedaboard, Metronome

*** Specialties ***
I prefer to teach people starting out in tablature, as I feel that they can more easily access songs in this method. I will, of course, teach them some basic note reading and the fretboard. I feel that learning chords and strumming is a great way to ensure that students feel success as they progress...as they can begin to play simple songs. I play all sorts of music myself, from rock to folk to blues.

Jason has been providing in-home guitar instructions to one of my children for about 1.5 years. The entire experience has been truly and absolutely fantastic. He has a unique ability to be incredibly flexible in his teaching approach to best accommodate the individual student. Moreover, he's able to modify his approach given the particular circumstances on a particular date (perhaps the child is under the weather, crabby or a bit out of practice). Whatever the situation is, Jason is able to maximize the lesson and everybody leaves with a smile and some musical inspiration. Most importantly, individual lesson goals are consistently achieved and my child always has a clear understanding of what needs to happen before the next lesson (let's call it homework). Jason has been able to light the musical spark in my child and is continuing to provide the tools to get to the next level -- all while having fun. Jason has also fostered my child's musical creativity by supporting and fostering her creations and integrating that creativity into his lesson plans. In short, Jason is the best guitar teacher ever, hence the 5 stars!

As a self-taught guitarist who later went to college for music and now runs a guitar curriculum blog, I tailor all my lessons to the student's age, ability level, music interests, and preferred learning style. No matter what Riffs, Parts, Changes, and Improvisational skills you want to learn, I can teach you, but more than that, I can teach you how guitarists teach themselves.

About Richard
Rick's been teaching Guitar, Banjo, and Ukulele at his home, and at the Mount Olivet School of Music in South Minneapolis, ever since graduating with a degree in Music from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2003. He plays around town in 3 bands and also does the occasional Pit Orchestra and Wedding gig. He also taught at Dayjams Rock Music camp in St. Paul for the five summers of its existence. In his spare time he writes YA Stories and Musicals, he also runs a Songwriting and Music Theory Blog about Tonal Trends in popular music, a Guitar Curriculum Blog based on Karate Belts, and is a regular contributor to the music magazine Flypaper by Soundfly.

*** Lesson Details ***
Depending on student interest, lessons can consist of Ear Training, Improv/Jamming, learning Popular Guitar Riffs/Changes/Parts/Etc., Note Reading, the Music Biz
, and learning about all the cool new Music Technologies of the day. Rick also loves to transcribe any and all music the student wants to learn but for which they cannot find the sheet music or internet tab. Rick prefers to teach what the student wants to learn, but if they're not sure what that is, he helps them figure that out.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Wifi, Computer, and iPhone. I make good use of technology during lessons. Much used apps include Guitarbots, Slow Down Music Trainer, TabPro, and the Guitar Toolkit (metronome, tuner, etc.)

*** Travel Equipment ***

Alex has inspired my son to love playing music for the rest of his life. I can't think of a more wonderful gift. His technique in teaching allowed my son to enjoy learning guitar by playing songs he wanted to play. This made him want to practice just for the fun of it! Alex taught my son from the time he was 9 years old until he was 15. The easy going, positive attitude Alex exudes encouraged my son along his journey and made a strong bond and connection between the two of them. No matter what style you want to learn, we begin with basic finger techniques and note recognition. Once you have the coordination (and the callouses!) we will move on to basic chords and lead guitar methods. Then you can choose your style and jam away!

About Dayna
I am a life-long musician, performing with my vocalist mother from age 4 and studying piano and voice for all of my childhood. However, it all changed the day my 5th grade band teacher put a tuba on my shoulder. It was a match right from the start and, from that day forward, my life has revolved around school band. I earned my Bachelor of Music Education from South Dakota State University, marching with the Pride of the Dakotas for the 2000 Independence Day parade in Washington D.C. as well as in the 2003 Tournament of Roses Parade. Upon graduation I taught in rural South Dakota schools for 4 years before packing up and moving to Los Angeles, CA to pursue a career in songwriting. While composing is still a part of what I do as a musician, I missed teaching and took a position with a prestigious middle school music program in San Diego, C
A. I taught individual lessons, small ensembles, and jazz band there for 5 years, before packing up once again and heading for the Twin Cities where, with any luck, I'll once again have a full studio of amazing students!

I continuously perform, write, and play music and I love to tailor lessons toward the goals and interests of each student. I incorporate different styles and techniques that help students at any level be a greater success!

Some of my favorite students are adults who decided to give it a shot. For one, adults learn faster and function better, and it's fun to watch them improve rapidly, play (and sometimes perform!) their favorite songs.
