About Arlys
Are you a singer or speaker who would like a more powerful, authentic voice? My focus is to assist you in finding an easier way to sustain your best posture, breath support, resonance and pitch control by bringing awareness to existing vocal habits while providing a hands-on experience adjusting those habits. My mission is to help you find your most relaxed & elongated posture, breath support, full resonance and best pitch control.

My specialty as a professional voice teacher is Contemporary Commercial Music [CCM] which encompasses genres & sub-genres from Pop, Country, Hip/Hop, Folk, Rock, R&B, Soul, Gospel, EDM [electronic dance music], etc.

I grew up singing freely and naturally until I destroyed my voice thru improper, frequent overuse. I believed my career was over, but it was just starting. Private lessons with vocal professio
nals coupled with academic studies rebuilt my perception of how I was generating sound and their training gave me back MY VOICE, for which I am forever grateful. I combine knowledge from these studies and my own vocal exploration to re-build my voice in exercises that I share with students of voice.

I CAN HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS: My cross-training in dance, yoga, Tai Chi, commercial & improvisational acting provides a well-rounded platform from which to deliver information, guide vocal explorers and also help develop talent.

EXPERIENCE:
* 18 years teaching experience
* 12 years living & working in Los Angeles
* A lifetime of performing experience
* 12 years personal private vocal studies master teachers of bel canto & contemporary singing techniques.

LIFE SKILLS: No matter the subject, my focus is also teach skills that can be extrapolated into any area of your life. Life Skills focuses on eradicating negative self-talk and expanding communication skills that help develop confidence, enhancing daily life.

Between performing and my own artistic studies, I have been taking the occasional private voice student since 1997, mostly via referrals from friends and other students. While living in California, one of my voice teachers requested me as her regular substitute at Culver City and Santa Monica Music Schools from 2008-2012, which I felt deeply honored. She said she trusted me with their voices, which encouraged me into full-time voice teaching practice. In June 2012, I returned to Minneapolis and began teaching in my home studio through music services like Take Lessons. Past projects include producing a vocal showcase at The Ritz Theater, musical direction & choreography for a school's 2016 production of the Wizard of Oz; assisting students to prepare for local & national auditions like La Banda, The Voice & American Idol; prepping singers for studio recordings and congratulating a new student who's stepped out of the chorus to land her first lead role!

I am forever grateful to all of my teachers, past and present, for their valuable gifts of knowledge, skill, grace and compassion.

ENJOY LIFE MORE! Singing & dancing improves our quality of life.

About Alex
Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/orchestrator/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedicate themselves
to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am experienced in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Instrument-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Arranging & Orchestrating
Sight-reading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Instrument maintenance
Instrument-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

I took beginner's guitar lessons with Alex. He took into account what my playing goals were, stylewise and whatnot. He's super knowledgeable on musical subjects besides just guitar. I've come away feeling that I have good foundational knowledge to build upon as I progress in my playing. I had the five lesson package, which I felt suited my needs. Tip: If you do something like that, space out your lessons at least every other week, so that you have time to practice and grasp what you're learning. Be sure to ask questions if something is new to you, especially if you're a beginner. I highly recommend guitar lessons from Alex!

About Cheri
I earned my B.A. in piano, 1979, from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where I was steeped in Bach and Chopin. My Masters work at Emory University in Atlanta further deepened my knowledge of classical performance practice and music history. I have studied with jazz pianists Laura Caviani and Sean Turner of the McNally School of Music, both of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Today I am an active solo party pianist, and leader/arranger for my own five-piece r&b band, Wild Honey. I have received statewide air-play performing Bach on Minnesota Public Radio. At the other end of the spectrum, my band Wild Honey has been featured on KBEM Jazz 88 FM’s program, “Jazz and the Spirit,” as well as KARE-11 Television’s morning program, “Minnesota Showcase." I serve as an exam judge for the Minnesota Music Teachers Association, and helped write its ground
-breaking Popular Styles Exam Syllabus. I am a 2012 recipient of the Maureen Conway Award for Inspiring Teaching.

I started my piano playing experience as a high school student knowing absolutely nothing about music. I really enjoyed piano lessons with Cheri because she is a great instructor. She is kind, patient, and understanding. I always looked forward to lessons every week knowing I would have a great time. From individual music lessons to playing for an audience, it was always fun and exciting. I highly recommend music lessons with Cheri!

I have an awesome time taking lessons from Cheri. From the beginning when I was learning lessons from different books to currently learning pieces by ear, from playing solo pieces to being part of a band, she has always been patient and fun and very knowledgeable. Being an adult student is an interesting and challenging experience and Cheri has been very supportive every step of the way. She even helped me write a song that included guitar and vocals that we performed with some fellow students at a recent recital. I've appreciated all the time she's worked with me and hope to continue taking lessons from her as long as I enjoy playing the piano.

About Colin
Colin has 20 years of experience spanning all genre's and styles of music. Countless hours of stage performance with bands. A love, drive and passion for music and drumming you won't find in any other instructor! Multiple studio recordings both behind the mixing board and behind the drum set. 10 years of teaching experience, realizing the importance of setting a unique curriculum for each student tailored to fit each individual's goals and interests. I have been involved in bands ever since middle school, starting with rock, and moving on to perform in country bands, hip-hop performances, indie rock bands, and progressive rock bands. A strong knowledge of jazz techniques and music theory as well as the ability to read drum sheet music make me a perfect instructor for any student.
I have had many beginner and intermediate level student's
and have become proficient in determining what skills each individual student needs to work on as well as helping students progress in their interests, keeping the lessons fun and the student motivated. I can easily transcribe any song as well! So any song you might want to learn, even if there is no sheet music, is totally doable. I love working in odd time signatures and I prefer fancy hi-hat work over heavy double-bass drum use. Progressive / Indie rock is my favorite genre of music to play, but I have tons of fun playing hip-hop, punk, metal, I dabble in jazz, Latin rhythms, and pretty much anything else. I'm always excited to play drums, and I pass this excitement on in my teachings.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons and curriculum's are built around a students experience level, age, and goals. Students will learn the fundamentals of drumming, as well as the ability to add flair and pizzazz to their playing. Within the first 3 months, a beginning level student will have the ability to play basic beats found in many styles of music, as well as feeling comfortable playing to a metronome and keeping time. Lessons will include routines to be practiced by the student on their own time, as well as fun, exciting techniques to keep students interested and motivated to continue playing.
Each Lesson will hold its own highlights depending on the student. I believe getting to know the student and their goals for their drumming is one of the most important aspects of teaching lessons. Understanding whether the student is looking to drum as a hobby and for fun will change the lesson style dramatically compared to a student looking to make a living off drumming. The types of routines, styles and techniques taught should fit into helping the student reach their desired destination.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the basement, full band rehearsal set up with 2 drum kits, one for the student, one for the teacher in an acoustically treated room.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to have a drum set and drum sticks. I can provide a drum set for lessons but it is important for the student to have a drum set or practice pad to practice.

*** Specialties ***
I have touched on almost every genre of music. I specialize in rock, progressive rock and fusion.

About Yasmin
I studied classical piano and theory with Sr. Cecile Amore, jazz theory and mellophone with be-bop saxophonist John Mastroianni, jazz piano with Noreen Grey, and jazz history with the late Bill Finegan- big-band leader and acclaimed arranger for Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller.

I enjoy playing classical music (primarily Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin) tango, and pop songs as well. I have played keyboards and bass guitar professionally and enjoyed some commercial recognition in California when invited to open for a well known Bay Area band ("Foxboro Hot Tubs" a.k.a. "Green Day") at The Roxy and a handful of other west coast venues.

My music students are introduced to basic music theory, notation, and technique to enable them to play fun, simple melodies after the first lesson, and fun simple arrangements after the first month.
My stude
nts can expect lessons to suit their tastes and goals, whether they intend to pursue music formally, professionally, or for personal enjoyment.

*** Lesson Details ***
Expect this to be fun! All lessons will incorporate proper playing technique and elements of the most basic theory, no matter the style of music. If students can devote some time to practice every week, they will see results. If students practice daily, they may exceed their expectations!

With each new song or lesson to be learned, I walk you through each part so that your practice time alone is fruitful. I encourage students to tell me what they want to learn. Any arrangement, classical or pop, can be made accessible to any level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In-Studio lessons take place in teacher's home or at Chanson Voice and Music Academy in St. Paul.

*** Specialties ***
Ear training, music notation & sight reading, music theory, tablature, lead sheets, solo and ensemble.
Classical training, for those so inclined!

About Kate
I have been teaching music lessons since 2004. I come from a family of music teachers and have always loved teaching music. I am classically trained: I received my Masters of Music from the U of MN and love playing orchestral, concert band, and brass quintet music. I have experience playing rock, blues, jazz, folk, and free improvisation as well. I currently play trumpet with Brass Lassie, a Scottish big band; the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble, a swing band, pop music cover band, and an original folk music group. I also occasionally play with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and various brass quintets in the Twin Cities.

*** Lesson Details ***
What can parent and students expect from me? I emphasize good habits and technique from the very first lesson. I like to get to know my students and find out their goals as well as interests
so that the student maintains interest and has fun. This is important to me.
I incorporate music theory, ear training, and rhythm into my lessons for a well rounded musical approach. I also teach beginning students how to read music. I am able to teach a variety of genres of music and am more than happy to explore them with all of my students.
What do I expect from students? I expect students to come to lessons prepared: I expect them to have their instrument, music, and to have practiced at least 3-4 times that week. In my experience this is the best way to truly master a musical instrument.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a large studio space with an upright piano, sturdy chairs, and music stands. I have a variety of different types of trumpets for intermediate-advanced students to experiment with: a Fluegel horn, piccolo trumpet, C trumpet, and a cornet.

*** Specialties ***
-My specialty is in teaching trumpet lessons. I am able to teach any level of trumpet lessons, from beginner to advanced.
-I teach beginner to intermediate piano lessons.
-I teach music theory lessons and can teach from a beginner to an advanced level.
-I teach free improvisation and encourage the ability to play freely and harness creativity.

Kate has been a really fantastic teacher so far. I've played trumpet on and off for the last ~20 years, and for my most recent "on" I decided to take it more seriously and sign up for lessons instead of doing it on my own. I'm really glad I did!

Kate clearly knows her stuff, and she was quickly able to identify important things for me to work on that I would've had a hard time hearing myself. Even if I had identified those things wouldn't have known what to do about them.

I would definitely recommend to Kate to anyone, of any skill level, looking to improve their trumpet skills.
