I earned a BFA in Musical Theater and a minor in Music, as well as a post-baccalaureate certificate in Speech & Hearing Sciences, where I studied vocal physiology and function. I have been coaching my peers since 2011 and began working with private students shortly after.
I use vocal techniques and didactic methods that are based in science and the innate physiology of the voice. I believe this form of "evidence based practice" frees the natural voice and makes you sound like you! I believe classical technique is the foundation for all healthy singing, but I am well versed in the stylistic and technical demands of many different genres and I have expertise in making those adjustments in my own performance.
Thank you for visiting my profile and I look forward to working with you!
I had around two months of lessons with Michael before I left the Seattle area. They were great! I'd been singing along with my own guitar playing for year, but had no formal voice training. Michael met me where I was at vocally, and introduced exercises for building good habits and a greater awareness of how my voice works and what I can do with it. He also had suggestions for songs that were in the style I enjoy and would challenge my abilities, then helped break down and work through the vocals. I think as an adult (I'm 32) it can be intimidating to dive in to learning something completely new but I had an enjoyable, stress free, successful experience with Michael.+ Read More
recommended, Michael pays close attention to your individual specifics plus provides a thorough grounding in classical voice training.
I have so much fun with Michael. As he once told me, he takes his work seriously, but doesn't take himself too seriously. This leads to a very relaxed and personable, yet professional lesson tailored to what you're trying to accomplish. His scientific background on the physiology of the voice was particularly helpful to me, as he could explain with biology what is happening when you sing properly. The best part is how much we laugh and joke around while we work through the more difficult parts of a song. I always look forward to our lessons and he is a pleasure to learn from!+ Read More
Michael was very knowledgeable and made each lesson fun. I'm looking forward to more lessons with him.
He is well knowledged, easy to relate to and fun.
I have seen Michael twice now and am very excited to continue lessons with him. He has taught me a lot about proper breathing techniques and vocal warm ups. We are working together on a few songs that I would like to perfect. His knowledge and ability to accompany me on the piano during lessons is invaluable.+ Read More
I am really enjoying lessons with Michael. I have taken 4 so far and it's amazing how much he has helped me to improve the way I sing. He has taught me some vocal exercises and vocal techniques, which I found really useful. Plus we always work on a song of my choice for the second half of the class. I would really recommend Michael as an instructor.+ Read More
