Music has always been an important aspect of my life! I learned the violin at the young age of 5 and have been playing ever since. I learned violin through the Suzuki method and had the opportunity to attend Dr. Suzuki's music camp in Japan. I learned guitar on my own in high school and also took classes while studying music at Radford University. I love playing modern and classic songs on the violin and guitar. I have been a private teacher for over 10 years and love empowering students in their abilities! I received a Bachelor’s in Music from Radford University in Virginia where I was the concert master of the Radford University Chamber Orchestra. I was also involved in a number of different ensemble groups and concluded my success with a solo senior recital. I was a member the Virginia Beach Symphony Orchestra where I especially enjoyed playing in out “pop music” concerts. I currently play the violin on stage with a variety of groups and enjoy giving private lessons. My music therapy background enables my ability to relate with individuals of different abilities and age levels. For 3 years, I had the privilege of being the sole music therapist at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. While in this position, I used music to help long term hospitalized children cope with their hospitalization through a number of music activities. These activities include conducting music groups for preschoolers, school age children and teens and teaching patients lessons on the violin, guitar or keyboard. *** Lesson Details *** Playing music can be learned in a fun environment filled with laughter and smiles. I adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of each individual student and their personal learning style. With this being said, within 3-6 months, you will begin discovering how to read music and understand music lingo. Younger students learning violin, may learn how to play by ear through the Suzuki method, before reading music. Developing the technique of an instrument is vital for success. Therefore, I will implement music skills and music theory so that you can learn the instrument and all about the exciting world of music. Classical music and modern songs be used to create a positive learning environment that meets the student’s musical preference. I have a friendly, caring and patient personality and I tend to connect well with children and adults. I believe that motivation, commitment and passion for music are key ingredients for success. *** Travel Equipment *** Have music stand, books, guitar and my violin. *** Specialties *** Suzuki method on violin Group performances at nursing homes Adaptive lessons

Meryl really knows her stuff! I'm looking forward to the rest of my lessons. I was unable to learn the correct posture and positioning from YouTube videos on my own. There is no substitute for having an in-person lesson.

When my 7-year-old son decided he wanted to play Violin, I was surprised, as seems more the drummer type. We signed him up with Meryl, and he has now been playing for 2 years and really enjoys it. His success has been nurtured by Meryl and her wonderful teaching style. She always enters our home with a smile and upbeat attitude, which starts our guy off with the right frame of mind for learning. She has the right balance of directed instruction and praise when a good effort is put forth. We would recommend Meryl very highly.
