I spent years working in New York City with acclaimed Metropolitan Opera bass baritone Mark Oswald. Prior to my work with Mark I received a bachelors degree in Music Performance with an emphasis on opera from Portland State University.

My teaching is rooted in body awareness and emotional connectivity. I use techniques I learned and developed over years teaching movement (barre3). I also use techniques I learned from taking music lessons and coaching sessions from some of the most reputable artists in the opera world.

I write my own music and I also reinterpret classical pieces to make them more accessible to modern audiences; I have a unique ability to cut to the essence of a song.

I currently play shows at The Dandy Warhols’ wine bar The Old Portland and have a music project with Zia McCabe of The Dandy Warhols.

About may A.

For years I worked in New York City with acclaimed Metropolitan Opera bass baritone Mark Oswald training my voice and building my technique. Prior to working with Mark I received a bachelors degree in Music Performance from Portland State University with an emphasis on Opera.

An Oregon native, I was raised in a small town in the Columba River Gorge called Hood River and grew up listening to classical music, hiking, snowboarding, and mountain biking. I firmly believe that a strong connection to your body and a connection to nature are the foundations of any creative expression.

I perform regularly in Portland, mostly at The Dandy Warhols’ wine bar THE OLD PORTLAND, reinterpreting songs from the classical repertoire and playing them in a grungier, post punk style on the acoustic guitar. I also write and perform my own original music.

I have performed principal roles in operas and sung with orchestras, most recently as featured guest solo artist with The Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta. I love traditional classical music, but I also love innovating a creating new sounds. Most recently I shared the stage with Zia McCabe of the The Dandy Warhols at the Kink.fm Bloodworks Live Studio where I sang opera while she played her vintage bass synthesizer.

My voice lessons include vocal exercises and repertoire development. I also incorporate physical exercises to help connect to the breath and postural muscles. Having worked as a fitness instructor for four years, I have found the practices of yoga and pilates to be especially helpful. I like to utilize techniques from those practices.

I specialize in singing but can also offer guidance on music theory, songwriting and arranging, piano, and guitar.
