    Understand what you're hearing!

Ear training entails cultivating an inner understanding and conception of music. Through ear training, students can learn how to identify the pitches, rhythms, and harmonies in music and sounds they hear around them. Ear training can also help develop the ability to look at a written piece of music and know what it sounds like! Most ear training comes in two distinct categories: transcription, aka the categorization of what you hear around you (learning to write down what you hear) and sight singing, aka learning how to hear sounds internally and reproduce them with your voice (learning how to hear what is written down)

Hi! I'm Matt, a saxophonist and composer. As a sax player, I've performed on stages as varied as Dizzy's Club Coca Cola and Carnegie Hall. I'm a graduate of Manhattan School of Music's Jazz Program (BA '18). I teach saxophone to people of all ages and skill levels. In addition, I teach independent ear training and music theory lessons (I also factor ear training and music theory into saxophone lessons if students are interested). I love tailoring lessons to suit specific students needs. As a musician, I value a flexible approach to music, and this flexibility is what makes me a versatile teacher! Whatever you're seeking to learn, be it technique or fundamentals of the saxophone, strategies for more efficient practice, or analytical skills (jazz and classical), I can help devise a practice/study method that's right for you and will help you meet your goals!

My son Tom was a first-year public school band student (saxophone) in fourth grade. I wanted to keep him playing during the summer, and Matt really came through with challenging and engaging practice sessions. Tom said it was harder than band practice, and pretty soon I found that he was opening the case and practicing on his own without any prompting from me. Matt helped him pick some music to work on, set some goals, and they consistently worked and advanced, and worked and advanced. Tom did his lessons over Zoom and it was ideal. I could hear in the tone in my son's voice that he really liked Matt and felt relaxed. And then I would hear this organized, structured practice session, and I was amazed at how Tom improved. This fall a buddy of Tom's from another school asked the Band teacher if he know my son. The Band teacher said yes he did, and that Tom was the best saxophone player in the fifth grade! I'm grateful to Matt for working with my kid, and I'm looking forward to hiring him again.

Matt is an engaging teacher who is insightful and accomodating. I'm glad I found him. He is going to help me learn my favorite song, and for now we're doing a lot basic learning and exercises. He's very versatile, seems to make up teaching methods on the spot as my needs arise. My kind of guy.
