High Notes and Confidence: improve your trumpet playing, lose the nerves, and have fun!

My first goal in my own personal playing and teaching is to have fun. Playing music is called "playing" for a reason. However, in order to have the best experience it is important to have control of the instrument and be able to produce a good sound. I think this basic philosophy holds true for both beginning and advanced students. I have been teaching for almost 15 years, students of all ages and abilities. My expertise is in classical style but I also play in jazz and other popular genres.

    About Matt B.

Hello! I am an active freelancer and teacher based in Chicago. I hold the position of Principal Trumpet of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, am a musician member of the Chicago Philharmonic, and a founding member of Landmark Brass. Additionally, I have performed with groups and artists, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Music of the Baroque, Grant Park Music Festival, the WHO, Josh Groban, Yo-Yo Ma, the American Ballet Theatre, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others. Although I maintain regular teaching studios at Lake Forest College and at Libertyville High School, because my performing career takes me all over I’m looking for openings in my virtual lesson studio. If the post-Covid world has brought us one good thing, it’s the amazing improvements in video call technology which allows for virtual teaching to be every bit as fulfilling and rewarding as lessons in person — especially for students whose situations may make traditional one-on-one in-person instruction difficult or inconvenient. I hold three performance degrees from Northwestern University, completing my Doctor of Musical Arts degree to in the Spring of 2023. I’ve been playing the trumpet for over 20 years and have been teaching for almost 15 of those years. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and ability levels, students who have aspirations of professional music careers, and those just playing for fun, I teach in all idioms and styles including jazz and classical playing. One of my most important teaching philosophies and goals for my students is to help them find comfort and confidence on stage. I am an expert in helping students gain confidence and comfort playing on stage and in the stress of audition environments. I live in Chicago with my wife and two beautiful cats. When I'm not playing trumpet you can probably find me watching ice hockey. I proudly hail from Detroit Michigan and am a huge Red Wings fan. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, thank you!
