Learn Cello from A Professional Composer with 15+ Years of Experience

I have more than 15 years of performance experience and a degree in cello performance from the University of New Mexico. I have performed solo, in string quartets, and in large ensemble and symphonic contexts. You can learn to play the cello with me from beginner to intermediate levels. I can teach you to play classical music reading 5-line staff notation in bass clef, tenor clef, and treble clef, as well as to learn how to improvise to perform within other musical contexts, such as in pop or rock music. I can teach you proper technique, bow holds, posture, how to read music, scales, ear training, tuning your instrument, and I can recommend the best exercise books for beginner to advanced students, as well as teach extended techniques for the more curious players. From week to week, we will work to make sure you make progress and excel as a musician!

I am a professional composer, cellist, and recording artist. I received a PhD in Music Composition at Northwestern University, where I have taught a number of music classes, including aural skills, music theory, music composition, and Music and the Visual Arts. I've written music in lots of different contexts, for solo instruments, chamber groups, large ensembles, pure percussion, pure electronic, for dance, and for theater. I also teach cello lessons to beginner and intermediate students learning for the first time. In my weekly composition lessons, you'll get the same quality of learning that a university student would receive, and I will equip you with all the tools you need to improve your musical compositions. Every person has a unique creative voice, and through my lessons, you'll learn to sculpt and craft your individuality to make your music shine. I teach lessons to students 7 and older, at all levels of experience. Whether you're just starting or you've been composing for a while and feel stuck, I can help you on your journey. My primary specialty is contemporary concert music, but I can teach students writing music in any genre or style. I teach in person and online, and I can teach composers of concert music or theater, songwriters, film composers, and pretty much any kind of music creator. I look forward to meeting you and helping you become a better composer!
