Find Your Singing Voice with a 45+ year experienced Teacher/Performer/Musician/Music Director

In my music career, I have been a performing pianist/keyboardist/vocalist/Music Director for over 45 years. I have worked with community and religious choirs, community and professional theater groups, educational institutions (elementary through college), bands and orchestras, and many Broadway and TikTok stars (including the Sharpe Family Singers.) My teaching methodology is simple: You must crawl before you walk before you run. Whether a 5 year old or a 65 year old beginner, I teach the rudiments of music from day one: for singing it is learning all the mechanics that makes someone a singer (breathing, enunciation, performance techniques, confidence, ear training, etc.); for piano it is learning to read music - clefs, time signatures, key signatures, dynamics, etc.) We learn as we sing/play, so you are actually singing songs or playing piano and not mimicking what I do. This brings a much more robust experience to each and every student, something that we can build on as you travel on your music journey. For voice, we spend the first part of each lesson doing warmups and working on technique. Then for the remaining part of each session, we work on applying what the student has learned to music that s/he likes to sing. It is irrelevant what style that may be; what's important is engaging and making our lessons together fun and productive. For piano, I use a very popular series of learning books to help us along the way, which is then supplemented at the appropriate time with exercises and sheet music. Every student is different, everyone does not learn the same way or at the same pace, so I customize my lessons to compliment the learning style of my student. This helps to ensure that everyone gets a positive experience, one that fosters confidence and accomplishment rather than fear and anxiety. If you have the time, the desire, and the funds to embark on this musical journey, I hope you will consider allowing me to be your tour guide. Happy trails!

I love teaching Voice and Piano, and over these many years I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of students young and old alike, from 5-yrs-old to 65-yrs-old, helping them to achieve their musical goals: for budding pianists, teaching them how to play or for more seasoned professionals, helping them to improve their playing/reading skills. For my voice students: learning or reinforcing all the skills it takes to be a singer and applying them to songs to create our version of “magic” in helping them to find their voice! I take what I've learned and experienced over these past 45+ years and apply that to a fun and productive learning environment. Most importantly, I love seeing the looks on my student's faces when they realize the improvements that they've made through our time together and their hard work. Their accomplishments, either breaking through a vocal brick wall that's been in our way from achieving that goal, or finally mastering a piano piece that we've been slaving over. There are very few things in life more beautiful than witnessing this kind of success; it's just a great feeling that we share and celebrate. What you should know about me is that music has truly been the biggest and longest part of my life. I started playing piano at the age of 10ish, starting acting/singing on stage in school in 6th grade, and began working as a professional musician when I was about 13-yrs-old. As a pianist/keyboardist and singer, I worked every gig and venue possible: weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, Sweet 16's, proms, birthdays and anniversaries, dive bars, restaurants, high-end nite clubs like the Palladium NYC, concert venues including Lincoln Center and the Central Park Band Shell, street festivals . . . anything you could think of. I've been a Music Director/Accompanist for thirty-years for school, community and professional theater, and most recently with several current and past Broadway stars. It's all this combined experience that gives me a huge edge over many other teachers as I have put everything I teach into practice and then some. Additionally, I use professional recording equipment in my home studio for which to make demos, backing tracks CD’s for auditions and performances, and recordings that my student can use as a learning tool or to play for friends and family (maybe there’s another YouTube star in you?!) Some of my students even recorded holiday albums as gifts! Also, I have access to an enormous library of music that helps us to expand our repertoire.

Marty is the best! I have been going to him for voice lessons since April 2019, and I can say with confidence that I am a better performer and person because of him. He tailors the exercises done in lesson to each students’ abilities/struggles and gives helpful and clear feedback. He provides a 15 minute vocal track to practice daily and helps you choose really fun songs to work on. He teaches almost any singing style you can imagine, but I go to him for musical theater style singing lessons. I always have such a great time singing with him and I’ve learned so much in these two years. Beyond that, he is such an incredible and down to earth person. I think any performer or human being can learn from Marty. He is just truly the Greatest of All Time.
