Mark holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri. He teaches piano, violin, and composition. His students range from preschoolers to adults and include all skill levels, from beginner to professional.

Mark is the Artistic Director and Conductor of BRAVO Youth Orchestras, a social justice after-school program for underserved families in North Portland. Mark is also a faculty member at Multnomah Arts Center where we directs the Multnomah Chorus, a non-audition adult choir. In the past, he has served as Associate Conductor at Pacific Youth Choir and a faculty member at Community Music Center.

*** Lesson Details ***
Broadly, lessons will be geared to the needs and goals of the student. Possible components of the lesson include warm-ups and stretches, technique, ear training, choosing and fine tuning pieces of music, and composition. I am a hands-on, one-step-at-a-time teacher. I believe in the whole musician, which incorporates music theory, history, composition, and performance as it applies to each student and their areas of interest. In all cases, we will be searching for and exploring music that the students can be excited about.

BEGINNING PIANO and VIOLIN - The foundations of music require many skills layered on top of one another. We will start by learning fingering, note names, and short pieces. The students will be making music even from the beginning. The lessons will progress from learning by rote to reading music. We will incorporate clapping rhythms, singing, and musical games.

INTERMEDIATE PIANO and VIOLIN - We will focus on refining technique, sight-reading, music theory, and building an exciting repertoire of music that they love to play and can share with others.

I look forward to meeting you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Grand Piano, and a music stand for violin lessons

*** Expanded Background ***
My emphasis is classical or Fine Art music. I have conducted several youth and adult choirs in Portland. I have also sung with various choirs including the Oregon Symphony. In graduate school, I studied composition and the fundamentals of Music Theory.

As the Artistic Director of BRAVO Youth Orchestras, I have arranged over 100 pieces of folk, popular, and classical music for youth orchestra. I also conduct around 50 concerts a year.

Mark is an excellent teacher. He takes the time to be sure that the student (me) understands the purpose of the lesson or exercise and how it relates to progress towards any goals that have been set. I would have no qualms about recommending him to anyone who is truly interested in learning.
