Overview

If your child is bright and creative, and you are not sure if he/she will do well with "traditional" piano lessons (or perhaps he/she has quit lessons with a more traditional teacher), I might be the right teacher for you. As a child, I went through many, many different piano teachers before finding someone who clicked with me and appreciated my musicality and personality. Once I found that person, I loved my lessons, and I went to receive a BA in music with honors at Harvard, and an MFA in musical theatre writing from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.

I'm a caring, intelligent and creative educator with 10 years of experience teaching private lessons and in the classroom. I use interactive, curiosity-driven games to teach music notation, and I love to incorporate technology. I've worked with older beginners and students already play well by ear but are hesitant to read, as well as excellent readers. I specialize in ages 10-15, and also students with learning disabilities.

I met Lisa while she was teaching Music at the American International School of Mozambique. She taught me for two enriching years and, since then, has continued to be influential in my musical career. When we first met, she was enthusiastic, encouraging, and – most importantly – filled with musical excitement. Under her, I studied the flute (starting as a complete beginner) and I had, within a short time, become a proud flutist. With her encouragement, I continued to study music with the unique opportunity to work with her one-on-one in pursuing an IB Music course. We studied not only the flute but all explored all aspects of music across cultures. While it was a heavy course load, she made the material engaging and interesting so that the work felt effortless and fun.

Lisa has a passion for music that I have yet to find in another teacher. Her unique teaching engages students and challenges them to discover on their own terms. Using games, flashcards, songs, and tapping into student creativity, she introduced and guided me through the complex world of music. I can say without a doubt that she is the reason I still love to play the flute!

I would recommend Lisa to any student: especially for students who are struggling to find their musical niche. Her passion spills over into everything that she does and makes any activity (be it practicing or performing) engaging, educational, and fun. Best of luck on your musical journey!

I took lessons from Lisa Burns for 2 years in piano, music theory and ear training. My skills improved immensely after the 2 years of lessons. Lisa is an engaging, fun teacher who will challenge you to do your best and improve. She taught me beginner music theory by playing games which made everything easier to learn and not forget. My sight-reading improved a lot as well as my technique and musicality.
After taking lesson with Lisa, I was motivated to continue to play the piano and study music theory. Im in my last semester of my first year of college where I'm a music major. Lisa's lessons taught me all the basis to be able to play more proficiently and have be able to continue my studies in piano and theory.

Im really passionate about music thanks to Lisa's lessons, if you're looking to improve your skills in music theory and piano together with get a strong basis to grow as a musician, Lisa is the perfect match for you!

I first met Lisa Burns, in Maputo Mozambique and asked her to be my personal piano teacher as she was my band teacher (I play the clarinet) in high school and I really liked her way of teaching. She gets really creative with her lessons, turning musical notes into flash cards and making sure we know our rhythm with funny pneunomic devices.

I really thought the first few piano lessons were going to be frustrating since I cannot read music all that well, but she made it really fun. Her 1 hour lessons are well constructed. The lesson usually starts with minor/major scale exercises and ends with us working a variety of songs that we would chose together to learn and possibly perform in recitals.

Now I am in second year of college doing an engineering major, and I still use my clarinet, piano and music skills to join fun engineering marching bands! I would definitely recommend Lisa to any passionate music students out there!
