About Kyle R.
I am a freelance composer and clarinetist based in El Cajon, CA. I began studying clarinet 20 years ago, and I graduated with my BM from the University of Florida in 2007, where I studied with Mitchell Estrin, former second clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. I subsequently earned my MM from the University of Illinois and my PhD from UC-San Diego in music composition, where I studied with Katharina Rosenberger.
As a clarinetist, my background is primarily in classical, orchestral, and contemporary music, and I've performed with the Gainesville (FL) Symphony, the Albany (GA) Symphony, and the La Jolla Symphony on clarinet and bass clarinet. I am currently a member of the San Diego-based ensemble Figmentum, playing clarinet and toy piano.
As a composer, my music has been performed throughout the United States and around the world. I write (mostly) acoustic chamber music, but I have experience with large ensembles and electronics as well. Currently I am working on pieces inspired by interactive fiction (online text adventure and choose-your-own-adventure stories).
I teach all ages and skills levels. Lessons are always tailored to the experience, interests, and goals of each individual student. What kind of music do you want to play? What kind of music do you want to write? We'll develop your specific program together.
In addition to music, I am a big fan of baseball, video games, and science fiction (especially Star Trek).
