I teach students how to love playing music. We work on instrumental technique, practice improvising, and learn songs, tunes, pieces, and exercises. We talk about the music we love, about music history, theory, harmony, appreciation, and everything in between. I teach students how to love being musical, and how to love sharing music with their friends and families. We learn everything in the context of the music students are already listening to. If they don't know, then we explore and learn new music with open minds. I've been teaching private lessons in person for over twenty-five years on saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, flute, and piano. During COVID, I moved all my lessons online, and have had great success keeping all of my students engaged and thriving within the online format. Though I have several adult students, I generally teach children, starting with late elementary, and continue mentoring and tutoring them weekly through high school. My ultimate goal with younger students is to empower them with a skill and a passion that they can be proud of continuing to share for the rest of their lives. To put it simply- in twenty, thirty years and beyond, my former students won't say "I used to play in middle-school." They'll still have their instrument up on a stand ready to play... eager to share, entertain and delight their friends and family.
