Inspiring students young and old to enjoy saxophone and music through their own interests and skills

Very personable, easy to talk to, great listener, cater the lesson to the student's level and interest. I love finding out what music the student likes, so we can incorporate that into sax lessons! During the quarantine, I have enjoyed teaching via video chat, figuring out ways to get students excited about music, creating innovative methods to keep them motivated to practice.

I have played professionally for 13 years and taught lessons for 10 years. I love learning what my student's interests are, like favorite genre, artist and song, to inspire them to keep practicing and improving. I feel it's a balance between showing students the fun, creative side of music and teaching them important yet routine exercises. Having 2 kids of my own, having been a camp counselor and Big Brother, and having grown up taking sax in school and private lessons from age 9, I understand what makes kids tick and what keeps them motivated. I feel the key is keeping practice fun and holding their interest so they keep practicing and making improvement. I believe everyone can understand and appreciate music, and has an inner musician that just needs some guidance to unlock! My typical lessons include practicing scales by finding a catchy pattern-- preferably one that the student knows from a popular song-- and working it in various scales. I also try to make lessons fun by having students listen to a simple rhythm that I play and copy it. I train them to hear patterns, recognize intervals and rhythms, understand their instrument, and find their own voice and style.

Kevin has been a fantastic teacher for my 10 year old son, who went from a casual interest in the saxophone to being excited to take lessons and practice almost every day. he keeps getting better and better with every lesson. Kevin is a very good teacher— patient, courteous and very encouraging. Would be good for a student of any age. He’s also very easy to work with in scheduling lessons, easy communication and follow through. Highly recommend.
