Have you ever wondered if you could play the piano like the person you have heard of admired? The answer if Yes! As a private piano teacher for the past 20 years, I have had the pleasure of seeing students as young as 4 and as old as 70 enjoy seeing their talent become alive as we unlock what has been inside. I began piano lessons at the age of six and continued for the next 14 years with private piano study. This gave me many levels of education about playing the piano, which I share with my 40 students each week. At the age of 13, I also began to realize that I could listen to a song, look at the chord and notes on the music, and put them together to make the song sound like it should. This was fantastic! I realized I could play by ear and read music, which is a strong focus of my teaching methods...to make sure a student is proficient in both areas. While attending Oral Roberts University, I also studied music there. I am currently pursuing a plan for a Masters of Music degree. I am currently serving as Minister of Music at a local church, where I attend with my wife of 18 years and three children. *** Lesson Details *** As a student of Kevin, he or she may learn to play with different plans. If a student has never studied piano before, I will always begin with the basics....learning each note of the piano, learning a very easy five-note finger exercise to reinforce the notes just learned and then learning basic note values. I always strive to instill practice, practice, practice! I believe that this is the primary way that any student will achieve and master their desired goals of playing such a wonderful instrument. I am only the vessel to help guide the student in the right direction. Many students begin to see progress and achievement of different levels within 3 to 6 months. Again, the key to progress is practice! I consider playing the piano something that is an extra-curricular activity, knowing that all families have a life, as I do. With that in mind, I stress flexibility and ease with the practice schedule at home during the week, and also flexibility in the lesson time schedules. Things do come up from time to time, and this is always understood. *** Studio Equipment *** home location: grand piano 88 keys weighted church: acoustic upright 88 keys weighted Cavalry Cathedral: two grand pianos. *** Travel Equipment *** I will be able to provide instructional materials and resources. I would expect the student to provide a working instrument (keyboard or acoustic piano) *** Specialties *** Classical methods are probably my strong suit; however, I am very comfortable and knowledgeable in gospel, some jazz and blues, Ragtime. For the beginner, I prefer to utilize the Alfred series, Faber/Faber, G. Schirmer, Hanon finger exercises.
