Overview

I am very lucky to be able to share my passion for playing the flute with others for a living! It is so fun to hear how students grow with each lesson! I have taught beginning-advanced private flute lessons for 10+ years from children just starting out in band and adult beginners wanting to cross off an item on their bucket list! It is never too late to start, and can actually be very good for improving your breathing!

In 2009 I graduated from the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana with my Master's in Flute Performance. Prior to that I attended Florida State University and earned my Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance.

Bio
I was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida. At the age of 12 I started taking flute lessons with Betsy Hudson-Traba, principal flutist of the Sarasota Orchestra. Throughout high school, I played in Sarasota’s youth orchestra program and was a winner of the Young Artist Competition. With lots of hard work, I also won first chair flute in All-State multiple times.

With a solid foundation in flute playing, I went on to study with Eva Amsler at Florida State University where I earned my Bachelor of Music in flute performance. I had a lot of wonderful playing opportunities here and as an undergraduate was playing in the top orchestra. During my time at FSU I was a proud member of the “world renown” Marching CHIEFS, where I served as section leader to 50 plus flutes! One of my favorite and more unique ensembles I participated in was the Andean ensemble, Aconcagua, where I played the zampona (panpipes) and the quena (Andean flute).

After undergrad, I decided to go abroad for graduate school earning my Master’s at a small conservatory in beautiful Lugano, Switzerland called the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana. I studied under Italian flutists, Mario Ancillotti, Stefano Parrino, and Giovanni Crola. I also had many opportunities to pursue my love of travelling and work on my foreign language skills! Although, I could use some more practice… would love to find some Italian and German students to brush up my skills!

After heading home to the States I began my freelance career substituting in various orchestras in Florida including the Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Ballet Orchestra, and the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra. I now live in Acworth, Georgia where I teach privately and freelance. In addition to music, I love spending time with my family, friends, my husband, Vance, and our adorable kitties (Ron & Harry) and dog (Leia). I also enjoy reading, hiking, baking, organizing, and cleaning!

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in flute and piccolo solo, orchestral, band, and chamber ensemble playing and also audition prep.

My granddaughter McKenzie was new to high school band. She was a little nervous about learning to play the flute and the life of a new high schooler at the same time. Kelly set her fears aside and was very patient with her. We feel blessed to have such a good teacher. The waiting area in her home is very comfortable

My daughter Clarisse had her first lesson with Kelly today, and we are very happy with how the lesson went. Kelly is professional and skilled as a teacher, as well as a fantastic flutist herself. We look forward to future lessons to take Clarisse's flute playing to a whole different level.

My first lesson with Kelly was very encouraging and enlightening. She is very knowledgable, plays beautifully herself, and was able to communicate her thoughts on the music (Debussy's Syrinx) very effectively.
