Is it hard to learn a musical instrument? That’s usually the first question
people ask. My answer? Not at all! I teach music in three
easy steps: Speak, Read, Write. "Speaking" music simply means learning to
listen and play your instrument. Reading and Writing are what allow you to
pick up your favorite piece of music and learn it on your own, just like
reading a book. Whether you want to play in a concert hall or in your living
room, I will give you the knowledge and technique to help you make
music a part of your life.

About Kathryn L.

Hi there! I am a professional opera and choral singer, pianist/accompanist, and Celtic harpist. I love all animals (especially dogs), and baking goodies for my friends, family, and students!

I hold an MM in Voice, summa cum laude, from UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music, and a BA in Music, magna cum laude, from Luther College with a minor in English and Education. My educational training includes Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze methods, as well as Alexander Technique. As a singer and harpist I've performed around the United States and the UK, at venues such as the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. I've worked alongside such professionals as John Williams, Stephen Spielberg, and several notable classical musicians.

Voice students can expect to learn healthy vocal techniques, including good breath support, air flow, and presentation. I encourage my students to find their unique vocal sound through an Alexander Technique inspired method of undoing and releasing negative habits so that the voice flows freely and naturally. This approach facilitates confidence, musicality, and is just plain fun!

I teach harp and piano students of all different ages. I've played the piano for over 20 years, and harp for over 10. I work with students to make music a part of their daily lives, even with minimal practice time! As I always say, 5 minutes of playing each day is better than 30 minutes one day.

I am a classically trained musician, but I also love folk music and musical theater. I look forward to sharing my love of music with you!

I can not recommend Kathryn as both a voice and piano Instructor highly enough. She is an extremely down-to-earth and highly gifted instructor. She makes her students feel comfortable but will also challenge them to bring out the best in them. She has extensive knowledge of vocal repertoire as well as an efficient and fun approach to piano methods. Kathryn is also an active and professional vocalist which gives her an ability to guide students through auditioning processes, audition piece selection, and requirements for overall performance preparedness. Her background as a Celtic harpist and pianist also enables her to help singers approach their musicianship skills with the acumen of an instrumentalist; a truly important skill that will set you a part from other singers. Kathryn has specifically helped me work through issues with my vocal health. She has given me practical and tangible strategies to ensure that I develop a healthy vocal tone and maintain good vocal care habits. If you are looking for a teacher with a TON of experience, an unassuming demeanor, and the ability to help you reach YOUR unique musical goals and needs, Kathryn is just the instructor for you.

Katy is an excellent musician, a very talented soprano soloist, and a skilled pianist and lever harpist. I have never studied with her but I have played harp with her numerous times. Her musicianship is flawless and she has a wonderful sense of humor so our time together is always enjoyable. I highly recommend her as a teacher and as a caring person.

Kathryn’s dedication to making sure I’m getting to practice not only what is necessary skills-wise, but also what interests me is invaluable. I really feel like she is genuinely interested in supporting me in my goal to play better. It’s also extremely helpful when she finds clever ways of explaining a new concept that I may not understand at first. Plus, I can tell she really knows what she’s talking about whenever I have a question. Highly recommend!

My son enjoyed his lessons with Kathryn. She taught him at his pace where he enjoyed music. He enjoyed piano while he was with her.
