My approach to music education is one that puts musical expression first and then applies technique as appropriate to an individual's virtues. Oboe in particular is an instrument whose complexity lends itself to dogmatic approaches that can stifle individual growth. This is because the oboe is an instrument that requires constant fine tuning and adjustment, both of the instrument itself and the reeds that one plays. In this way, oboe is very much a craft, more than just a consumable product. As an expert in instrument adjustment and reed making, I can help students overcome the fundamental difficulties of playing oboe and focus on the most important aspect, which is making music.
I have a bachelor of music, master of music, and specialist degree in music education. I really enjoy teaching part time because music turned my life around when I was struggling in middle school, helping me to become the best that I could be in all aspects of life.
I had an oboe on trial and Justin really helped me learn more about the instrument and adjusted the keys so it played its best. He was very insightful and informative.
