My students rehearse with me for an average of 8 years, and flute beginners quickly achieve musical and technical artistry ! Over the years of my 3-decade career in Classical Music, I have crafted a teaching style that minimizes practice time, maximizes progress, and allows my students, ages 7 through adult, to have fun while practicing. Here is what I do in the first lesson: - Assess the student’s level for interest and progress - Understand the student’s goals - Design a custom path of study for lasting achievement By getting in touch with yourself and your Creative Spirit, the sky will be your limit. We will develop your technical style in such a way that your technique becomes effortless, uniquely yours, and then your musicality will have the tools to blossom. There are three (3) distinct levels of self-mastery to Flute Technique and several areas of specific skills within each level. I explore each level separately and then combine them into one truly integrated technique. My online teaching methods and techniques have reached students in over 30 states in the U.S. as well as Canada, England, Australia, Belgium, Italy, France, Spain, South Korea, The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, Germany and South Africa. “The sculpture is already inside the rock; all you have to do is remove the excess stone”. – Michelangelo Success Stories: -Many students have won $5,000/year in scholarship money for 4-year colleges (even while majoring in fields such as medicine, engineering, architecture, and the sciences). -A recent student (taught between the ages of 7 – 17) submitted an audition recording to Brandeis University and was awarded the prestigious Leonard Bernstein Fellowship amounting in $20,000/year for 4 years. -A former high school student went on to music college to major in music therapy with hospice patients. She loved the field so much that she is going back to graduate school for a degree in Social Work. -Several students have achieved a perfect score in the level-6 category of the NYSSMA competition and went on to perform in the ALL-STATE WIND ENSEMBLE and ORCHESTRA (who select the top youth performers in the state).

About Julie O.

5.0
(18)
About Julie O. Julie’s education and teaching style is a result of earning an associate degree, bachelor’s degree in applied music, as well as completing graduate work at the Eastman School of Music. She has spearheaded recitals for adults, organized a structured “Master Class” rehearsal program, and wrote her own transcriptions for flute choir to include strings and voice all within a Community Music Program. As Principal Flutist with various chamber groups through the years, she was also most notably asked to perform in recitals for advanced students at the Eastman School of Music, a Memorial Scholarship concert for excellence in Flute performance at the Crane School of Music commemorating professor emeritus Don MacDonald, as well as performing in a Master Class with Peter Lloyd, former Principal Flutist of the London Philharmonic held at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She began her music education wanting to be a recitalist and orchestral player, but her career goals changed when she started teaching flute, noting that students needed to have a more solid direction than what they were experiencing. She realized, largely due to her conservatory training in the art of teaching private flute lessons, that she possessed unique insights into helping students achieve their flute aspirations. Julie has perfected the art of providing appropriately challenging material so every student can learn how to practice effectively while taking a holistic approach to education. Julie’s Definition of a "Professional Music Teacher" 1. Someone who DEDICATES their life to the education of their students. 2. Someone who has the EXPERIENCE and INTUITION to forge a pathway for each individual child and LOVES every moment of each lesson. 3. Someone who has the TRAINING and VISION to teach multiple levels of interest from the casual learner to the symphony-bound performer. When studying with a Professional Teacher the student awakens to a new level of learning and accomplishment, creating better study habits, developing a lifelong love and respect for others, and allowing confidence and contentment to build self-esteem which in turn leads to success. Her progressive flute accomplishments (from Youth to Adult) make her relatable to students of all levels: -In high school, asked to play with the Navy band with the best youth performers in the area. She knows the mindset of high achieving youth flute players. -In college, played in the youth symphony, which is a select group that performs the exact repertoire that professional symphonies perform. -During college, exclusively played the principal positions in wind ensemble and orchestra. -Performed in numerous professional level chamber music opportunities -Performed Mozart solos with orchestra in college -Principal flute in the Music Educators Wind Ensemble; soloed with a summer wind ensemble and was founder and Flutist of a professional performing Woodwind Quintet -Principal flute for several faculty chamber orchestras that accompanied the college choir -Played principal flute in a professional baroque chamber music group as well as performing in numerous Faculty Recitals Julie does offer the opportunity for student lessons to take place, on a limited basis, during evening and/or weekend hours for those times where scheduling conflicts arise. Julie is fantastic! She is so patient and sweet with beginners. She laughs, jokes, and tells stories to put her students at ease. She is able to teach her lessons easily online. My daughter loves her flute lessons and looks forward to learning more difficult pieces.
