Julie has perfected the art of providing appropriately challenging material so every student can learn how to practice effectively while providing an education of the student's entire person. A number of Julie's students who are musically skilled by the time they apply to college or university have won scholarships of $ 5,000.00 per year for four years even though they majored in other fields of interest such as medicine, engineering, architecture and the sciences. One of her more recent former students who she taught from the age of 7 through 17 submitted an audition recording to Brandeis University and was awarded the prestigious and sought after Leonard Bernstein Fellowship award which amounted to $ 20,000.00 per year for four years. Her education and teaching style on Flute is a result of earning Associate and Bachelor Degrees in Applied Music as well as doing graduate work at the Eastman School of Music. She also spearheaded organizing recitals for adults, a structured “Master Class” type rehearsal program and wrote her own transcriptions for flute Choir to include strings and voice all within a Community Music Program. As principal Flutist with various chamber groups through the years, she was also most notably asked to perform in recitals for advanced students at the Eastman School of music, a Memorial Scholarship concert for excellence in Flute performance at the Crane School of Music commemorating professor emeritus Don MacDonald as well as performing in a Master class with Peter Lloyd, Former principal Flutist of the London Philharmonic held at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She plays a Muramatsu GS-7 Series solid silver heavy wall flute with 5 microns of 14 karat rose gold bonded to the exterior and interior of the flute. An instrument no longer in production. Her head joint was custom made for her by legendary flute maker Jack Goosman and is 9 karat solid gold with a 14 karat solid gold lip plate and chimney. One of only two of its kind and the other one is owned by famous flutist James Galway. Julie does offer the opportunity for student lessons to take place, on a limited basis, during evening and/or weekend hours for those times where scheduling conflicts arise. Learning from Julie is a true gift. After leaving high school band over a decade ago, I decided to try the flute again. I considered various teachers both locally and via the online platform. I kept being drawn back to Julie’s profile due to her focus on the individual and what seemed to be her emotionally intuitive approach. She approaches teaching and the concept of learning from a childlike place; she believes in having fun and finding true joy while connecting with the instrument. Not only does she encourage a playful attitude while learning, she bring so much technical knowledge: she’s an accomplished flutist, has studied clarinet, and originally studied percussion. Whether you are learning on your flute for the day, practicing ear training, learning flute history, or taking a day to review rhythm, a lesson with Julie is never time wasted. I am beyond happy with my decision. After 7 months of lessons, my confidence as a flutist has vastly improved, but also I reflect daily on the life lessons she has shared with me. I am excited to pick up my instrument every day when I come home from work. She has so many strategies to keep my motivation level high, and she is extremely flexible in her approach. I plan to continue taking lessons with her for as long as possible, as I can not imagine a week without flute lessons from Julie.
