Over the years of my nearly 4 decade career in Classical Music, I have crafted a teaching style that minimizes practice time, maximizes progress and allows my students, ages 7 through adult, to have fun while practicing. I began my music education wanting to be a recitalist and orchestral player but my career goals changed when I started teaching flute and saw how my students needed to have a more solid direction than what they were experiencing. I realized, largely due to Conservatory training in the art of teaching private flute lessons, that I had the insights into helping them achieve their aspirations to play the flute. The secret lies in removing excess physical movements on the flute and any emotional / intellectual preconceptions. Then, the percentage of practice time perspiration will diminish dramatically. Michelangelo, famously said, “The sculpture is already inside the rock, all you have to do is remove the excess stone”. All of this applies to learning the Flute. If you don’t get in touch with yourself and your Creative Spirit, it will never happen but implement the correct procedures in the proper order, then only the sky will be your limit. That is what my Flute teaching method is really about. Developing your “technical style” in such a way that your technique becomes effortless, uniquely yours and then....your musicality will have the tools to blossom.
