I'm a passionate professional vocalist and a fourth generation music educator. With 20+ years of professional performing, coaching and teaching experience under my belt, my vocal teaching method unites my classical and musical theatre educational background with the techniques I have developed for singing Jazz, Rock, R&B, Country, etc believably, beautifully, and above all, safely!
In expanding my teaching practice to include piano and ukulele, I emphasize rhythm and musicality alongside technique and note reading. I always set myself the goal of learning what makes a musician sound "right," and not just "good" in a particular genre. This versatility has made me extremely employable as an artist, and, I think, uniquely qualified to teach. I believe that students will work harder on music that moves them, and I always encourage students to suggest songs that they care about. Good technique(s) can be applied to any repertoire!
Music Man Studios offers a wide range of instruments, and employs teachers with a variety of teaching styles and philosophies to make the best matches for their students. I have been lucky enough to teach voice, piano and ukulele here and enjoy the supportive, small-town atmosphere and sense of their place in the community.+ Read More
Teaching in a “strip mall music school” in Vancouver, WA. Here, my students range in age from 5yrs – adults, studying piano, voice and ukulele. This school expanded and rebranded in 2017 (It was previously known as Musical Beginnings, in a smaller location a few blocks away.)+ Read More
I have recently launched this School of Music with my husband, in an office space in Downtown Portland. I offer
voice lessons similar to my home studio, as well as offering in-home lessons as needed. I am also developing my
business to teaching experienced musicians in band leading skills, doing performance coaching and workshops in
business development. With my husband, we plan to offer combo classes as well.
I have been touring with live theatre and bands ever since I finished college. In the last few years, I have been focusing on JPJQ (Quartet), a jazz band that specializes in traditional jazz arrangements of modern songs (think Postmodern Jukebox with a Dixieland twist!)
I am also a featured vocalist, occasionally returning to Vancouver, BC to perform or record with Rollaway/Benton Roark Band (southern rock original band) and in Oregon with Freedom Street (Blues and Top 40 cover band).
While I have been teaching and coaching my fellow performers on a casual basis for years, since I moved to the Northwest, first in Vancouver, Canada, and now in Portland, I have finally been able to develop my own studio. I love being able to follow a student through the process of learning to sing in a way I never got to do as a short term coach!

On the day of our first lesson, my son decided he did not want to take any singing or piano lessons after all. Since it was too late to cancel, and with the hopes he might change his mind, we went ahead with the lesson. Julia stayed professional, calm, and warm through the whole session, despite my son's lack of enthusiasm, and she tried everything to make him comfortable. She told him that the fear of singing in front of people is very normal, explained how lessons would work were he to continue, and gave a bunch of very helpful tips on singing AND piano in terms a 12 year old understands. Hopefully he will decide this is something he wants to do after all. Julia was obviously very knowledgeable, talented, and great with kids, and I hope we can continue lessons with her.+ Read More
We are very happy with Julia's teaching of piano to our young daughter.
Julia deftly adapted her instruction to accommodate our daughter's interactivity level, and never over-praised, as modern psychology says is the correct way.
Our daughter practices spontaneously on her own, which can be at least partially attributed to Julia's teaching style.
Thank you, Julia.
Julia is very patient and kind and a good instructor. My daughter likes her a lot. A big plus for me is that she comes to our home and doesn't seem to mind that our piano is in our dark, dank basement! What more could you ask for?!
Lessons with Julia is my daughter's favorite part of the week. She is an amazing teacher!
This teacher is amazing - organized, knowledgeable, and talented. She is an accomplished musician, and helped me understand voice improvement and expand my musical knowledge. Her rates are very reasonable - I highly recommend Julia!
She also teaches piano and ukulele, I hope to take lessons on those instruments from her this year.
She is very knowledgeable, attentive, patient, and flexible for schedule. We are very lucky to find her!
Julia is a great teacher. She teaches more than just how to sing a song, you will learn why you sing a song a certain way.
Julia got right down to work after getting the download of what I was looking to do. Despite a musical background, this was my first voice lesson, and she adapted it beautifully to my specific needs.
Julia is knowledgable, patient and an excellent teacher.
Julia is a great instructor. She pushes me just enough. I've never had a voice teacher who just got me. It makes me want to stick with it that much more. Thanks julia!
I've really enjoyed my lessons. Julia's easy going and very attentive to my cautiousness about singing in front of people. Very happy with the lessons and with Julia's help!
I really enjoyed my lessons with Julia! She understood what I needed personally to work toward my long term goals and did a great job improvising when necessary and explaining things in a way I could understand. Also, overall a really kind and easy person to talk to - I definitely recommend her!+ Read More
Julia is a wonderful teacher. She can quickly identify any problems you’re having and give some good clear advice and instruction on how to fix the problem. She knows her stuff inside and out and she can explain and share that knowledge in a way that makes it easy to understand and apply. After every lesson I leave with a better understanding of my voice and what I need to do to be a better singer – thanks, Julia!+ Read More
