Dr. Stephanie is insightful with a gentle guidance and encouraging way about her that is magnetic. Her type of instruction is calming while still challenging to my children. I think what is most remarkable is her ability to pull out of a child what they are longing to show the world while still letting them know that these moments of training and practice are also for their inner growth.

From producing your first note to Pop and Jazz songs to seriously intense Classical music.

About Scott
As a composer I have found it necessary never to stray too far from performance. The shear exhilaration one can obtain through playing an instrument is unique and powerful. I have devoted my life to trying to understand and master this elusive beast we call Music. As a child, of a peculiar spirit, I demanded my parents get me guitar and piano lessons. I felt an instant connection to these instruments and was compelled to investigate. After years of inquiry I ended up attending New School for the Arts, a high school devoted to the arts where I
studied music composition. From there, I went on to the University of Arizona to receive degrees in Music Composition and Philosophy with minors in Mathematics and English Literature. For my Masters' programs I wondered into the world of contemporary composers and experimental music at Mills College
in Oakland where I finished my M.A. in Music Composition as well as my M.F.A. in Electronic Music and Recording Media. All the while pursuing a mastery of the instruments that caught my ear in the first place.

I have now returned to Tucson to work on my music and further my education in the field of philosophy at the University of Arizona.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am laid back and playful in my approach. I like to gear lessons toward the interests of the student, and if I am doing my job correctly, all traditional technique will be painless. I also like to delve into music theory to give one a deeper appreciation as well as an understanding and steady grasp of the tools of composition if their heart is so inclined. When it comes to music I am rather eclectic and I feel every style has something to add to the techniques of a solid performer, so I tend to draw from many disparate places to offer a fuller experience. In no time at all, you should be playing pieces you love, understanding how they work, and perhaps embellishing them or writing your own.

I have been playing the piano even longer than the bass, but I've never studied it as thoroughly. I can help you with many different types of playing. This is a great supplemental instrument if you are learning composition, arranging, theory, or ear training.

About Brenton
"Music is the best!" --Frank Zappa

That is the only thing I can claim to know for certain.

My ideals as a teacher are sound control, fun, and community. I teach all of my students how to play their instrument in a manner which they understand and enjoy. I demonstrate how much fun music can be once my student has the facility to create sound freely. And I inspire them to use this gift for bringing people closer together.

Since beginning my musical studies at California State University Northridge, I have been working as a musician in the greater Los Angeles area. Now over a decade later, I continue to perform and teach - enjoying the whole ride wherever it takes me. While my primary instruments are Contrabass and Electric Bass Guitar, I have technical know how on a wide variety of instruments. Some of these include the viol
in, guitar, and piano.

I'm also happy to teach students who already have technical facility are interested in learning about things like musicality, melodic phrasing, harmonic analysis, rhythmic accuracy, ear training, reading in various clefs, improvisation, and much more.

Let's jam!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring whatever I need to a lesson, but I expect all of my students to take the initiative to have all necessary equipment for playing. That being said, if a problem ever arises in the procuring of this equipment, I am always happy to help in anyway that I can.

Brenton really took an individual approach and made sure we focused on what i wanted to learn and improve on, while at the same time, reinforcing fundamentals and technique. I couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong that was keeping me from getting better. He completely focused and studied everything from my hand position, hand pressure, and posture, and insured that i understood principles and concepts that must be engaged in order to get better, and made sure he figured out everything i needed to do for me to improve, and gave me exercises and techniques to get there-almost like solving an equation. i am an adult very beginning student with no background in music theory and he made me feel comfortable right away and started teaching at the level where i was so that i stayed motivated. i would definitely recommend Brenton to help you improve your playing regardless of what level you are starting.

Piano can be made simple. My education of over 15 years includes Eastman School of Music talent and Phd level instruction. As a classical pianist, I've been awarded 6 years of Superior ratings by the American College of Music/National Piano Guild Auditions. As a pianist I've performed in 80's cover, original downtempo/trip-hop and indie pop bands, the later as the recording artist "Thea." I have created specific methods including my program Rockstar For A Day™ to guarantee your success!

About Dorothea
LATEST NEWS!
Not only am I am coach, but I also am a recording artist, singer/songwriter and composer. I just released my first EP, Beautiful Warrior, recorded at my own studio as well as throughout Greater Los Angeles studios.

EDUCATION
I started piano at age 4 and continued study for decades under top talent. I perform solo and in bands and keep up to date on techniques in the music industry through seminars, showcases and conferences. My own compositions blend classical piano with pop elements, which I have created throughout various local professional recording studios, including my own.

EXPERIENCE
I lend over 20 years of music and academic excellence to helping you realize your musical dreams: coaching, accompanying, performing (solo, ensembles, bands and rock bands), competing, arranging, composing, singing, songwriting an
d directing. I have experience working with singers, songwriters, live performers, DJ’s, producers, recording artists, stars and celebrities. From beginners to pros, I teach piano and songwriting in many styles: classical, contemporary, pop and rock. I specialize in classical and electronic pop.

I maintain professional association with ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), IMDB (Internet Movie Database), LAWIM (Los Angeles Women In Music), NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International), the CCC (California Copyright Conference), and Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society Alumni.

SPECIALIZATION
My unique journey as a musician/artist has led me to deeply understand what it takes to break away from the traditional grind of work and life to pursue professional musicianship and greatness as an artist. Although I train musicians of any age or skill level, I focus on those who are either professionals or who are motivated and committed to becoming professionals. I specifically teach (i) piano (with classical emphasis) (ii) the craft of songwriting, which has many multi-faceted components and (iii) composition. With extensive experience in classical and contemporary (pop, ambient, down tempo) music, I put equal focus on technique and fostering a musician’s personal style and passion for music.

PHILOSOPHY
I want you to achieve your greatest musical abilities. Moreover, I want to help you discover who you are as an ARTIST. So, to pull the very best out of you as your coach, I consider it my job to be requiring of you. To challenge you. To assign homework when needed (most often theory-related), but to balance it with fun. To encourage technique which will allow you the ability to play, or even write music, free form. To set realistic goals with you that you can be accountable for, and to dream beyond those initial goals.

I will provide you access to materials and opportunities unique to your interests, in and outside of lesson times. But I will let you determine your own pace. I will encourage and inspire you to move beyond any misconceptions; that notions of age or talent have nothing to do with achieving the success you desire. But I will respect the level of success you wish to achieve.

LESSON DETAILS
Basically, what you need to start is motivation and commitment! I will then spend the first lesson discussing your materials needs based on what method/keyboard you currently use or prefer to use (if you have one), allowing you to make requests for information before proceeding further. Otherwise, I will provide you with informed recommendations. Equally important, at your first lesson I will work with you to determine what specific goals you have so we can track them, together, and meet them, one by one!

I make special efforts to invest in each student’s particular needs to help them move beyond blocks and weaknesses, utilizing a variety of tools such as flash cards and supplemental workbooks, e.g. ear training, sight reading, note spelling, etc. as necessary.

Set your own pace with flexible teaching times--Suggested reading materials--Suggested mobile downloads to complement learning--Opportunities throughout L.A. county to practice, perform and/or learn musically--MIDI training with Logic Studio

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES!
2011 marked the successful launch of Rockstar For A Day, a trademarked artistic development program and production I developed to help give music students a taste of rock stardom. You’re invited to participate!

TESTIMONIALS:
"I started to learn to play piano at the age of 31. Dorothea introduced me to the world of piano. She was very patient with me and tailored the class toward my pace and interests. She is a fun and enthusiastic person. I felt really sad when she told me that she had to move." ~Duoli, PhD, Tucson, Arizona

"Dorothea's teaching style and level of comprehension from a students viewpoint is unprecedented. Her ability to naturally sync with my learning style has left me with an absolute understanding of my musical abilities, ones I never thought I possessed. She has a seamless ability to progress from musical theory to practical application, and it continues to feel as if she knows the right direction to continue that progression. I drive from San Diego to Los Angeles to attend her classes, probably passing at least 50 other instructors along the way. I would, without a doubt, recommend Dorothea to beginner, intermediate, or advanced students of all ages and backgrounds. With her you will succeed." - Jesse, radio broadcast DJ, San Diego, California

Broad background muscially, interesting, and effective communicator

I’m an adult who has played the piano for years on and off. Because of my prior experience I often ask questions that a beginner would not think about. Such as, is this a better scale fingering than the traditional one? Or what is a common key to use to accompany a sing-a-along group on a piano? Dorothea consistently provides intelligent and sometimes surprising answers to my questions.

She also is very focused on what you want to accomplish. Unlike past piano teachers, and I loved them all, who seemed intent on my learning the full classical literature, Dorothea asks what your main interest is. Is it composition, or playing, or arranging? Then she drives the lessons in that direction. Very customized lessons.

Another interesting example is scales. What’s new in that area, I thought? So she pulls out a book that has clearly defined levels of accomplishment. For example, if you can play the C major scale, quarter note = 80, with your left hand, you get one “point”. If you can do the same with your right, that’s another point. Playing with both hands together is yet another point. Playing both hands together but in contrary motion is another point. This pattern is repeated at increasing tempos and the number of points accumulated indicates your skill level. With that approach it’s not a matter of how long one practices but one practices long enough to reach a desired, measurable, skill level. I think that approach is novel and I had never seen it used before meeting Dorothea. In short, she is an interesting teacher with interesting ideas, methods, and very student focused. I don't think you will find a better teacher.

I have been teaching beginning and intermediate piano to students of all ages. I am especially good with younger students, or students who need a little extra support to succeed. I use the Alfred and Bastien series, plus I always ask my students what they want to learn, and we work on that in their lessons.

About Kate
I believe that a good teacher helps students teach themselves. Most of a student’s learning will be done on his or her own at home or in a practice room, so a teacher must give them the necessary tools to succeed, as well as constant support and encouragement. I graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor's in Vocal Performance, and from Penn State with a Master's in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. I have been teaching all levels of voice, and beginning/intermediate piano for almost ten years. I also have extensive experience working with special needs students. My goal is to teach healthy, grounded singing, no matter what musical style my students are interested in pursuing. I focus on balanced and centered body alignment, accurate body mapping, an easy breathing technique, and vibrancy/flexibility in sound. If ther
e is unnecessary tension or problems in these areas, this can hold students back from truly enjoying singing.

My great grandmother, grandmother and mother were all music teachers, and I'm thrilled and honored to have followed in their footsteps! I work hard to make sure that my joy in making music is passed on to you or your child.

About Julia
I'm a passionate professional vocalist and a fourth generation music educator. With 20+ years of professional performing, coaching and teaching experience under my belt, my vocal teaching method unites my classical and musical theatre educational background with the techniques I have developed for singing Jazz, Rock, R&B, Country, etc believably, beautifully, and above all, safely!

In expanding my teaching practice to include piano and ukulele, I emphasize rhythm and musicality alongside technique and note reading. I always set myself the goal of learning what makes a musician sound "right," and not just "good" in a particular genre. This versatility has made me extremely employable as an artist, and, I think, uniquely qualified to teach. I believe that students will work harder on music that moves them, and I always encourage students
to suggest songs that they care about. Good technique(s) can be applied to any repertoire!

We are very happy with Julia's teaching of piano to our young daughter.
Julia deftly adapted her instruction to accommodate our daughter's interactivity level, and never over-praised, as modern psychology says is the correct way.
Our daughter practices spontaneously on her own, which can be at least partially attributed to Julia's teaching style.

Thank you, Julia.

I love teaching piano because it was my first instrument at 2 years old. I have been playing since before I could talk so it is my best form of expression. The most important thing about teaching is remembering that the student wants to enjoy what they're playing, and they are learning because they ENJOY MUSIC.

I would love to help you play, write and perform your own music!

About Kyle
Hello!
I began learning piano at 2 years old and started teaching at the beginning of high school. During high school, I picked up percussion and guitar and started writing and singing my own music. In 2012 I joined a world class indoor drumline and played keyboard, placing 11th in the world. The beginning of last year, I was given the opportunity to teach a group piano class to adults with developmental disabilities.
