Master of Music in Choral Conducting

Trust your body to show the music

I hold a Masters in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University. I have been in front of vocal ensembles small and large, as well as instrumental ensembles. While in my Masters program, by major professor selected me to teach Conducting, which I did for 1 year. I teach conducting technique - the basic patterns and skills, all while building ear training, score reading, and a comfortable inhabiting of the body, so as to be fully deliberate, but wholly natural and fluid in every movement. Rehearsal techniques can also be covered, if desired. This could be good for students in undergrad or grad school who need refinement for their conducting classes, for church musicians being thrust into leadership roles, or for anyone who wants to feel more grounded and trusting in their ability to show the music with their hands.

    About John P.

Hello! My name is John and I am a singer and voice teacher whose goal in life is to help every student to feel more at home in their own skin. Whether this is through music lessons, audition prep, yoga class, or a conversation, I hope to be an agent to help everyone build self-awareness and self-acceptance in tandem. The tool I most often use is singing! I have a degree in Voice from UNT and a Masters in Conducting from SMU. I also love yoga and have my 200-hr RYT certification. I have been teaching lessons for 15 years, the past 8 years at Westlake HS here in Austin, as well as being on faculty at Concordia University and Austin Community College.
