My name is John B. I can't wait to meet you and introduce you to the wonderful world of music!
I have been involved with music since my teen years. I have had a lot of fun in my life playing various musical instruments in school bands, local and regional talent shows and festivals. I am a founding member of a Charlotte based popular local Cajun Band - "Carolina Gator Gumbo" and performed on stage for 12 years. I appeared on CBS Nationwide Network and local TV, Radio, and done multiple studio recordings. I have performed in Bluegrass and Old Time Bands as well as Swing/Jazz Bands.
I would love to introduce you to music so you can begin to have fun too - whether playing for your own pleasure, with your friends - or as a career. I hope to hear from you soon so we can discuss your goals.
I've been teaching private lessons part time off and on since 1971. My passion is to help my students read music and to play guitar, dobro or mandolin as well as other instruments. I earned an AFA in Music from Central Piedmont Community College. I'm a patient and flexible person and my teaching style is coaching and encouraging and fun!
I use various methods of teaching in my one on one lessons including books, handouts, internet sources, and smart phone technology and apps. I do my best to tailor lessons to suit your individual needs. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

John is diligent with his lessons and is very keen to transfer knowledge in a systematic way. His update on the summary of the lesson and next week assignment are very helpful. My son has learnt things well in a short period of time.
John was great, friendly and informative. He was able to guide me along at a pace that fit with my skill level perfectly. I look forward to the future lessons with him.
I am having so much fun taking lessons from John. He is very gifted with teaching and a talented musician. I am learning so much and so quickly. John is a great communicator and has a heart to share his knowledge with others. He is also very encouraging. I highly recommend John Bishop for lessons!+ Read More
I highly recommend John for music lessons. I took fiddle lessons with him and he is extremely patient and professional. He sincerely wants his students to succeed and have fun.
I met John Bishop while playing in a band. He added a lot of musical expertise and experience to our group. John has experience being lead singer, lead guitar, and upright bass player, as well as playing other instruments.
Because of his love of playing and teaching, John pursued a full Music Degree from Central Piedmont music department in North Carolina, and is set to be a full time teacher. His studies also included theory and composition, and performance.
As John's student I found him to be attentive to the musical needs of each student. He teaches each student the appropriate techniques for the type of music they wish to learn, and the style of music they enjoy.
I would like to recommend John as a long term teacher for the younger students, and as a very capable and fun teacher for adults as well. John also is able to recommend places to develop your playing as a member of music groups, and camps, and other fun venues to help further develop your musicianship.
I learned so much from John. He brings a wonderful balance between listening and learning. I had taken lessons from two other instructors before coming to John. John was the first instructor to teach me how to hold the violin properly. He started where you should....the basics. His approach made learning a delight!+ Read More
Mr. Bishop is a wonderful instructor. It's not only that he talented musically but also that he loves teaching. He taught both me and my sons guitar. They were 6 and 8 at the time we started. Mr. Bishop went above and beyond to encourage their interest in music. It wasn't just a love of guitar because it isn't for everyone. He was very patient with my easily distracted and sometimes rowdy boys. I am pleased to say that me and my oldest son have stuck with guitar. My youngest son likes music but plans to try piano next and may revisit guitar later. Not all those who are talented musicians have the patience and ability to teach. Mr. Bishop is a talented musician with a passion and gift for teaching.+ Read More
I am a semi-retired teacher who about two years ago decided she wanted to play bluegrass fiddle! How lucky was I to get John as a teacher! He took me from making screechy noises to actually being able to jam with others! (It proves that old dogs really can learn new tricks!) John is a patient and attentive teacher who will challenge you to improve, and have fun doing it. He has helped me to read music, play by ear, and improvise. He teaches just enough music theory to help your playing--and always follows up the class if needed with additional tips, answers to questions, links, etc. by e-mail. This attention to detail and clear, concise explanations makes him an excellent pick for an on-line teacher!+ Read More
What sets John apart from other teachers I’ve had is that he genuinely enjoys teaching and works to make his lessons fit his student’s needs. He has even emailed me additional tips or videos to watch after our lesson to reinforce a concept. He is an accomplished musician that knows music theory, proper techniques and performance skills. He challenges me to improve my playing with patience, kindness and encouragement. I would strongly recommend him as a guitar teacher.+ Read More
John has been such an amazing gift to inspire and teach. He caters the curriculum to your speed but still challenges you to go higher in your understanding of music theory. A wealth of knowledge he brings to the table; I would highly recommend him as your instructor!+ Read More
I have taken two guitar courses with John.
At the time a very new (but older) beginner guitar player, and I was really impressed with his patience and gentle way of steering us all in the right direction. His musical background and experience, both performing and with music theory, are evident in his course..He totally understands the stress of performing, in my opinion, and helps the student deal with that fact.
We moved right into basic theory when appropriate. John also had a steady stream of email lesson-correspondence, elaborating on issues discussed or observed in class. A large amount of information was covered in this way. The class didn't end when we left each day.
His enthusiasm was always apparent and kept us all engaged and wanting to do improve.. I continue to recall things that he said in class.
I recommend John without reservation.
Lou (who now considers himself closer to an "intermediate" guitar player. in part thanks to John.)
Oh my, where to start. Such fun getting lessons from this wonderful man. We laughed a lot. I learned so much and was not stressed at all. I would highly recommend John for anyone at any age. So laid
back and the patience of a saint. Thank you for everything.
John is a great teacher. I take classical guitar lessons from John and he has been able to provide me with new insights to both technique and music theory.
