Teaching since:

With over 15 years professional teaching experience in both private and orchestral settings, I can help you achieve your goals in a fun and encouraging environment. No matter if you're a beginner looking to fulfill a life-long dream or an advancing student studying the depths of upper-level string repertoire, I bring experience, expertise and differentiated instruction to our lesson, tailored to your needs.

"Joel's teaching style is a perfect match for both of my sons. He is a gifted professional and teacher who is knowledgeable and patient."
- L. M. (Morrisonville, NY)

As a performer, I have had the opportunity to record and produce five albums, most recently a family anthology of eighty-six tunes spanning five generations of my family's music. I have had the opportunity to tour with the band Jacks and Heroes as well as performing at the Great American Irish Festival in Utica, NY with my past band, Inisheer. One of my most memorable experiences was performing at a small chapel worship service that (then president) George W. Bush, his wife Laura and United States Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas attended.

I currently teach high school orchestra and instrumental techniques. In the past, I have taught high school music theory and composition, American Folk Music History, and Elementary General Music/Elementary Strings.

Areas of concentration:

Classical Violin
Double Bass

As a 5th generation fiddler, I specialize in bluegrass, celtic, and traditional styles of fiddling

Extensive background in sound engineering studies, technology in music, music theory, and aural skills.
