    About Joanie B.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Voice Performance with a minor in Theatre from West Virginia University, and two Masters Degrees in Voice Performance and Music History and Literature from Baylor University. I have been teaching for 15 years, and am performing in regional opera and musical theatre. *** Lesson Details *** Our lessons will be fun and challenging. You can expect support and encouragement for finding the best sounds your voice can make regardless of style. I've worked with students in many different styles, and find that the classical background can help you to open your voice and develop strength and control in breath, tone, and vocal color, no matter what style you sing. I'm an organized teacher who expects you to practice and improve on your own between lessons!! You'll find that practicing is a delight for your next lesson, and I love to motivate my students to improve and see the results in their performing. I help prepare students for performances, and can help with seeking out opportunities to perform. You will learn performance techniques, audition techniques, and how to make a song your own, as well as how to communicate in English and other singing languages. You will find your voice in a nurturing, safe environment, where you are free to experiment with new sounds. We will work together to achieve your goals!! In three to six months, you will have found your comfort level as a singer, and will have started to push beyond it into more challenging pieces and vocal technique. We'll also focus on reading music and music theory if that is new for you, and you will feel comfortable with beginning sight reading. You will also be ready to perform at least one new piece of music. *** Travel Equipment *** I will bring my books (so the student doesn't have to look over my shoulder) but they will be responsible for providing a piano, music stand, and their own copy/book of their assigned pieces. *** Specialties *** I was classically trained, but have also learned Broadway style singing. I am comfortable teaching both styles. I like to use the classical approach for new students to voice, even if they will be belters, as it helps them to develop breathing and understanding of vocal placement.
