    About Jewel P.

I'm a flautist that has been playing for most of my life. Having played piano from the age of five, at seven my parents could tell that, though I loved music, piano did not hold my interest. They introduced me to flute and the rest is history. I took private lessons from the age of seven through college with several prestigious flute teachers. From the point where I was no longer a complete beginner, I have been performing either solos or with ensembles and bands. At this point, I think I can officially say my flute is a part of me and I can't imagine my life without it. During my high school and college years, I taught private and group lessons to beginner and intermediate students. I took a few years off of teaching to pursue my other passion, rescuing animals, but I'm ready to hop back on the teaching wagon. I've found that passing on knowledge and skill makes me feel like I'm making a difference to this world, and so I will continue to do it as long as I can. This love of learning and passing on knowledge is also why I chose to minor in music while attending Brigham Young University and why I continue to perform and teach today. While learning technical skills and techniques are very important, I also feel that enjoying what you are playing and setting goals with enjoyment in mind keep people learning. With that in mind, I like to guide students on their own individual journeys in learning the ins and outs of music and flute while still keeping the spark that got them interested in the first place.

    Experience

    Elementary School Band Program Assistant

    Aug, 2001 - Jun, 2005

    Fremont After School Band Program

Taught weekly group flute (and occasionally other instrument) lessons to elementary school aged children in an after school program. Made sure students understood music fundamentals such as how to read music, rhythm, and how to watch a conductor as well as flute specific techniques such as fingerings, proper embouchure, and how to breath with proper posture. Guided the students, who mostly had not touched a flute before their fist class, to be able to play full page songs within a band setting within three months.

    Program Intern

    Jan, 2010 - Apr, 2010

Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area

Helped to run an after school STEM program for inner-city youth in grades 6-9. This included making lesson plans, executing the plans, and making sure the students were fully understanding the material. It also included finding creative ways to make the material engaging so that these at-risk youth would return week after week to learn more.

    First Chair Flute and Piccolo

    Jan, 2009 - Jan, 2010

    BYU Concert Band

Help the first chair for flute and only chair for piccolo in the BYU concert band. This meant I played many solos as well as being the only piccolo player for any pieces that required it.

    English Teacher

    May, 2008 - Aug, 2008

    Independent English School in Japan

Spent a summer of college teaching English to children (and the occasional adult) in Japan. During their summer programs, I would spend about eight hours a day teaching English in different levels to different age groups mostly in group settings. While we did do lessons from a book to follow their set curriculum, we would also play games to solidify learning and make the learning process fun.

    Section Assistant

    Jan, 2008 - Jan, 2010

    BYU Marching Band

Assisted a portion of the large Piccolo section of the BYU Marching Band throughout marching season and beyond. This included assisting in learning music, positions, and rapid memorization of other members of the Piccolo section.
