Learn Vocal Technique with a Working Professional Singer

Every student is a unique person who deserves a lesson customized to their individual needs. Each of my students prospers in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement. While the lessons are fun and enjoyable, the serious student will be supported in the development of skills leading to a rewarding career. And the more casual students will grow in an appreciation of music that will always enrich their lives. I begin each voice lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their session. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice. Materials needed: • I recommend that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. • Please use a recording device so you can record your lessons. It's a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice. We can record online lessons through most video platforms, but cellphones also have them if you prefer to record that way. • I highly recommend and sometimes require buying sheet music for the songs you are singing. • If you have music you're currently working on, feel free to bring it to our lesson so we can work on it together as well. No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

About Jessie M.

Thank you for your interest in lessons! I hope to help you achieve your goals and improve your skills, whether you're looking for music lessons, or help in math. Every student is a unique person who deserves a lesson customized to their individual needs. Each of my students prosper in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement. While the lessons are fun and enjoyable, the serious student will be supported in the development of skills leading to a rewarding career, and the more casual students will grow in an appreciation of knowledge that will enrich their lives. Experience: I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Redlands in 2011, where I attended on a music talent scholarship. While I was a student at the University, I sang in the award winning Chapel Singers chamber ensemble under the direction of Jean-Sebastien Valleé. As a versatile artist, I'm also well known as a pop singer and frequently perform with the jazz band, North Benched. I have been tutoring and teaching private lessons for 10 years, and currently have over 40 active students. As a working performer in Los Angeles, CA, I have played leading roles in many operas, most notably Musetta (La Bohème – DTL “Best Supporting Actress” award nominee), Miss Silverpeal (The Impresario), Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Nella (Gianni Schicchi), and Dorabella (Così fan tutte). Musical theater and operetta highlights include, among others, creating the role of Janine in the world premier of Gunfight at the Not-So-OK Saloon (a hilarious award winning Hollywood Fringe Festival operetta), Adele and “Allie”/Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Lisa (The Grand Duke), Lady Angela (Patience – DTL “Best Supporting Actress” award winner), Gertrude McFuzz (Seussical the Musical), Amy March (Little Women the Musical), Evita, and Guys and Dolls. In the summer of 2021, I was able to return to live theater with Mission Opera in the West Coast premiere of Offenbach's rarely performed Le 66 as Grittly, and recently sang the role of Gianetta in Landmark Opera's late summer production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a soloist and section leader in churches, restaurants, and professional pop bands. With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life they will achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!
