Teaches students:

Teaching since:
August 2013

With more than 24 years of performance experience, I offer my students a fun, science-backed technique that is perfect for all ages and levels. I trained at Juilliard, Pepperdine University and hold a degree from The New School.

I began studying at age 8 with this very technique and have been performing in opera and crossover music professionally since then, when I won an episode of CBS Television’s Star Search. At 18 I debuted with Festival Opera Walnut Creek as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro to much critical acclaim and went on with the company to perform Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Sophie in Werther.

Having attended the Music Academy of the West, and studied with the great mezzo-soprano, Marilyn Horne, I made my New York City recital debut with the Marilyn Horne Foundation in the spring of 2001. I made my Carnegie Hall debut in that same year in a series of masterclasses and recitals conducted by another great mezzo, Christa Ludwig.
In 2003, Ms. Tivens attended the San Francisco Opera Merola Program and immediately followed up with a year as a Resident Young Artist with Seattle Opera.

As a crossover and pop artist, I have performed and recorded with David Foster, Josh Groban and Mike Garson (pianist for David Bowie. My first full-length album, Unlimited, was released in 2007 and is currently available on iTunes and CDBaby.

In 2011, I returned to the Los Angeles area to perform the soprano solo in Orff’s Carmina Burana with the New West Symphony. I then traveled to the Strings in The Mountains festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where I performed two concerts as part of their summer series. In 2013, I will be featured singing Villa-Lobos’ Bachaianas Brasileiras no.5 on a new Mike Garson-produced album. My second solo album will be released in 2016.

Whether you are just beginning your training, if you want to sing for fun, or if you're an established professional, I can help by giving you the tools that will have you singing well for years to come.

Jessica has a lot of helpful practical knowledge of technique and listens well to apply that knowledge to asses personal needs and goals. Her teaching is a really nice combination of warmth, artistry and science. I'm really looking forward to my next lesson with her!

In just a few short months I can't believe how much I've learned from Jessica. My technique has improved; my tone in the upper part of my range has improved; how to keep my tongue from getting in the way / impeding the sound; so many aspects of singing. When I started my lessons I was particularly concerned that I might be doing something that was tiring my voice and causing it to lose volume. Jessica's knowledge of and ability to demonstrate proper singing technique helped me through that concern and I know I am a "healthier" singer now. Knowledge and ability aside, her approach is also very patient and very encouraging. I highly recommend her to anyone interested in improving their technique, tone, range, artistic ability, etc.

Jessica, Is an excellent voice teacher. She is kind, patient, knows music theory, and of course has a great singing voice as well. She has structured our lessons to cover the basics while also providing enough challenge to keep pushing me out of my comfort zone. I highly recommend Jessica as voice teacher!

A superb teacher

My experience with Ms. Tivens was incredible. She really knows her vocal science and has such a foundation in vocal pedagogy. Also, it's fun to work with her, not just a science class. She helped my range expand and made me feel more comfortable with high notes. Due to her extensive performance background, she has incredibly useful notes when it comes to how to sing in front of people. Just take one lesson with her and I promise you will comeback.

Jessica is wonderful!

I have been so impressed with Jess! She's warm and personable. She quickly identified what needed work within my voice and provides clear instruction on how to improve. She also recognize the strengths I had and reinforced them. Jess responds to emails promptly, and is really just the best! Oh, yes and my voice has gotten so much stronger in the little over a month I've been working with her! She explains everything well and when I don't understand she'll explain it in another way. She's in-tune with where each note should originate and how it should feel in the body. Lessons have been a fantastic experience. Highly recommended!
