    About Jeremy W.

I'm a drummer, composer, and music theory instructor from Long Island, NY. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in music composition from SUNY Purchase College, and am currently working on my PhD in music composition at UC Berkeley. As a drummer, I love playing and teaching all styles of music, with a particular affinity for rock, funk, jazz, alternative, electronic music, improvisation, and marching percussion. In 2013, I toured the country with NY-based folk band Elijah & the Moon, performing gigs in 10 US states including the Mountain Jam music festival. I always emphasize the importance of rudiments, fundamentals, and good technique in all my lessons— no doubt these are values instilled in me from my long background in marching and classical percussion studies. I've performed in jazz ensembles, rock bands, metal bands, cover bands, improvisation collectives, orchestras, and contemporary classical music ensembles. As a composer, my pieces have so far been performed in New York, California, Tennessee, Virginia, Ukraine, Italy, and in 2019, Spain. I'm highly trained in orchestration, score and parts preparation, music theory, and solfege. Not only can I help students learn the drum parts to their favorite songs, but I can also help develop the skills needed to analyze the melodies, chord progressions, and structures. I'm currently teaching music theory for undergraduate students in the UC Berkeley Department of Music. I use Sibelius notation software, Ableton, iZotope, Tama drums, Meinl cymbals, and Vic Firth sticks.
