    About Yunyi J.

Nice to meet you! My name is Yunyi and I am a classical pianist and harpsichordist. I have been playing piano for 18 years and teaching since 2012. I believe that the art of music is not simply a skill to be learned, but a pursuit that invokes curiosity, inspiration, perseverance, logic, and passion. My role as an educator consists of not only informing my students with the techniques needed to achieve their musical aspirations, but to inspire them with the joy and expression that music brings to the soul. The former is my duty, for it cultivates the student's progress in the art; the latter is my goal, for its endeavor enriches the student's life far beyond the lesson or practice room. My teaching style is conversational and cooperative -- I seek to engage and catalyze the student's problem-solving abilities, rather than give directions that are meant to be followed rather than understood. I do not have a fixed method with my students, each student's course is tailored to suit their age, personality, and learning style. My teaching style and materials for lessons are always personalized with the student's individual success in mind. ♫♩CREDENTIALS ♫♩ Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance Eastman School of Music, studio of Rebecca Penneys Master of Music in Piano Performance San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studio of Jon Nakamatsu Baroque emphasis, studio of Corey Jamason ♫♩ LOCATION & STUDIO AMENITIES ♫♩ I am currently based in the Portola district of San Francisco. All lessons will be conducted remotely through Zoom until the end of COVID-19. Once businesses are able to safely resume regular operations, in-person lessons will be available as an option to piano students in the SF Bay Area. ♫♩ LESSON MATERIALS ♫♩ Students are expected to show up to lessons prepared with all materials discussed in the previous lesson. Keeping a "lesson journal" with topics and assignments from each lesson is highly recommended. I may occasionally ask the student to purchase scores and materials that will be heavily used throughout lessons. For students aged 8 and younger, a small but routine amount of parental involvement is encouraged for best results. ♫♩ A NOTE ON DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION ♫♩ As an immigrant and member of the LGBTQ community, I am very sensitive to topics of diversity, inclusion, and representation with my students, and do my best to make everyone feel respected and comfortable. I am not a special needs educator, but I welcome the differences in each student's journey and do not turn down anyone that has the desire to learn -- and promise my best to accommodate on a case-to-case basis. Thank you for reading and I hope to see you soon! Yours in Music, Yunyi Ji
