Teaching since:

I have been teaching guitar for over 7 years and recently graduated from Macalester College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. My approach to teaching is student focused, emphasizing the individual goals of each student rather than adhering to more traditional, standardized notions of music education. As such, emphasis is placed on modern musical styles, repertoire, and technology. I have found that this helps to maintain students’ motivation, and improve retention and skill. After all, music should be a fun challenge, not a chore.

Additionally, I spent the last two years working as an audio engineer in concert halls and recording studios. As such, all students, regardless of instrument, will have the opportunity to learn recording techniques and make a high quality recording of their work, when/if they feel ready.

Thanks for your interest in lessons. I hope to hear from you soon!

Twice a week, I would perform a 2-hour setlist of popular songs from the '60s to now. I would sing and accompany myself on acoustic guitar. Singing for two hours straight in the late morning forced me to be very careful with my vocal technique, so I wouldn't hurt my voice.

I can't believe how much Jake helped me go from a zero to a hero! He was able to pin point my struggles and breakdown and show me the way to be successful. I feel so much more confident and comfortable with my voice.

Jake was my instructor for a year and not only was he fantastic but extremely patient with me. He would even let me record his playing so I could watch where I was making mistakes. Don't think twice call Jake!!

I took lessons with Jake for several months before he had to attend college and I learned various songs at a level that was pretty advanced. He was very patient and it was a great way to get going on the instrument and learn a bit of music theory. Being able to play songs I liked was encouraging and while I'm still taking lessons online, I think the chops I learned with Jake have helped me tackle new songs by myself. Thanks so much!!
