Teaching since:

I love bluegrass and old-time music. The first time I heard Scruggs play Foggy Mountain Breakdown, I was hooked. I took a few bluegrass banjo lessons from a local guy, and I was off. Around the same time, I discovered old-time music. I began playing clawhammer to accompany fiddle for square dances. Before long, I discovered Alan Munde, Bill Keith, and Bela Fleck.

I have a solid method that works really well for beginners; I really like working with intermediate and advanced students, too. I get a kick out of teaching because I find it fulfilling, and my students are all really cool.

I also teach guitar and mandolin.

A lot of music teachers will play a lot during a lesson and not let their student play, but Jake pushes his students to play, even if it’s hard, and just generally bad. Doing what makes you comfortable has never gotten anyone anywhere. He doesn’t keep his students in 1 place very long if they know what they’re doing. Obviously if they’re struggling, he’s there to help. His focus is on growth and accuracy as opposed to speed, which, when learning, is much more important. Speed comes with practice. It’s not how fast you play, it’s how well you play fast.

I’ve taken lessons for piano, guitar, and banjo, and Jake, by far, has been the best teacher I’ve ever had. I learned so much and got really good really fast, all thanks to Jake!

He also doesn’t waste your money. We started early and got out late and always worked until time was up. He doesn’t waste time; he gets stuff done, and I know I, like most people, really appreciate that.

Another thing too is that Jake is super enthusiastic about banjo and music in general... it’s not like most musicians... you’d be surprised. I’ve met a lot of musicians, and I have yet to meet or see someone more enthusiastic about music than Jake. He’s a super nice guy and always in a good mood... always. He’s definitely found his passion.

If you’re looking for lessons in banjo, this guy will get you there... you just need to be willing to do your part and practice. He will teach you what you want and will get you to where you want to go. He’s a tough teacher, but honestly, that’s the best kind. I garuntee you’ll look back at yourself after a month or two of lessons and be blown away by how much better you’ve gotten.

Jake was a replacement teacher that has been able to take me to the next step, easy going and makes the lessons very understandable. It is a pleasure to have Jake as a instructor.
