I am an experienced, certified music educator with a passion for teaching trumpet students of all levels and backgrounds. Lessons with me will be fun, exploratory, creative, and focused on your personal growth as a musician. I believe in inquiry-based learning, which means you will be discovering new things about music and trumpet with me there to guide and support you. We will explore several facets of musicianship to ensure you are cultivating a well-rounded musical education from your lessons. I graduated summa cum laude with College Honors from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree in Spring 2020, and I am a certified K-12 music educator. I am currently pursuing a Master’s of Music in Trumpet Performance at Longy School of Music of Bard College in Boston, MA. I have maintained a private trumpet studio for 5 years, taught trumpet at multiple El Sistema programs across the nation (including working with the world-renowned YOLA program run by the Los Angeles Philharmonic), taught music abroad in Chile, and designed and implemented a music curriculum for students with exceptionalities as the Music Director for the LSU Prism Project. I have performed professionally with the Opera Louisiane, Theater Baton Rouge, and the Cool Winter Nights big band. I also won a professional position on the substitute list for the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. I have also performed several world premiers of works for solo trumpet, trumpet and electronics, and chamber music featuring trumpet by composers such as Lara Poe, Anne McAninch, and Samara Rice. I believe in working towards music equity, and my work in this field (specifically promoting women in music) has been featured on the professional new music website I Care If You Listen.

Hollyn is a gifted and enthusiastic teacher -- I highly recommend her! She quickly built a good rapport with my 12 year old, who had been struggling with her instrument during remote learning, and we started to hear improvement in her playing right away. We also appreciated Hollyn's great communication skills and flexibility. She is by far the best music teacher we've worked with!

I have seen Hollyn teach students from age 4 to 22. She is unfailingly respectful and always has the student's best interest in mind. She takes a holistic approach and does identifies mental AND physical issues that may need corrected for optimal achievement to occur, and then she helps the student fix them in a positive and productive way. She is particularly skilled with dealing with performing anxiety or physical pain while playing and will soon help the student overcome any such problems. She has a great personality and sense of humor and the lessons are never boring, never repetitive. She has a great training in both musicianship/performance and pedagogy.

Hollyn is a fantastic instructor. I’m always so impressed with the variety of exercises she walks my son through in a 30 minute lesson. She includes ear training, sight reading, the mastery of scales, and practicing a new piece of music all in one lesson. She is extremely patient and kind and gently helps my son through frustrating moments when his abilities are being stretched and strengthened. My son now has about 8 polished songs to play for friends and family and I could not possibly be more pleased.
