    About Henry C.

A little about me... my name is Henry, some people call me "thehc3". I was born in Detroit and learned to play there. My first lessons were in school (Bates Academy, Renaissance High School) and in after school programs like the Detroit Civic Symphony & Jazz Orchestras, I even had an opportunity to learn at music camps such as Interlochen Arts Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. I moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, and have been playing professionally here ever since. While in college, I studied music composition and was one of the original members of the group Jaspects. I played in EVERY school ensemble that had a need for percussion, In high school and college. I had the honor of being section leader in most of those ensembles. I've enjoyed playing all over the United States and even in a few other Countries. I grew up playing jazz, but i love to play as many styles as i can; R&B, Hip-Hop, Latin, Rock, Gospel, just to name a few. I was trained classically and am familiar with many of the instruments in the percussion family but my primary focus professionally is drum set. *** Lesson Details *** In my lessons with beginners, I like to focus on the basics. We will start with learning about the drum and all of it's components. I teach rudiments (which are the basic building blocks of drumming), reading & writing music. I am a firm believer that reading & writing music is much like reading and writing any other language; if you are able to do those things, there is no limit to what you can explore. I will often ask students to bring in music that they like to listen to, and learn the songs with them. This exercise is engaging as the student first likes the music, and second they have learned something familiar... maybe to share with friends of family. I love to teach students what they want to learn! *** Studio Equipment *** Living room converted into music studio: drumset, computer and radio, seating just outside studio for parents *** Travel Equipment *** i will provide a drum or drum pad with stand and a music stand. i expect the students to provide sticks, books, pencil and paper. if they can afford a drum pad, or drum(s) that's good, but not required. *** Specialties *** I specialize in drum set. my first experience is with jazz, but i regularly preform gospel, rock, blues, r&b, and rap. I have been classically trained and am familiar with all percussion. I do not work often as a percussionist, nor do I own many percussion instruments, but i am proficient at most.
