About Harold C.
I love teaching, and strive to ensure that each student meets his/her personal goals.
My lesson environment is relaxed; I feel that if the student cannot
get a little fun out of it, something is missing. I do, however, expect
my students to practice and to pay attention.
I enjoy teaching beginners, particularly young (8-15 year olds)
children/teens. A beginner has no bad habits which need to be broken.
Adults and experienced players are also welcome. I have particular
expertise in jazz harmony, theory & improvisation. I teach the
Lydian Chromatic Concept, among other improvisational methodologies.
Experience:
1975-1978

1979-1981
Houston Baptist University
Majored in composition
Wrote my first complete symphonic work.
Studied with Dr. Robert Linder.
1982-1984
University of Houston
Additional music history & advanced theory study with Dr. Robert Nelson
*** Lesson Details ***
Focus on proper technique for all students, regardless of his/her
playing ability. Once proper technique is established, I utilize the
Berklee Series as a basis for instruction. These volumes are
supplemented by exercises, which I write specifically for the
particular student's needs. As the student progresses, I incorporate
tunes that the student wishes to learn into the lesson plan. If a student has a plan in mind, we go with that. Flexibility is the key.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument and teaching materials/accessories.
The student provides his/her own instrument
*** Specialties ***
music, Guitar, theory, arranging, composition, orchestration, film scoring
Jazz, blues, classical, rock
Reviews
Write a ReviewPatient and very encouraging
Harold from day one has been great. He understands the difficulties in learning to play a music instrument. He gives you enough material to practice and master before the next lesson and makes you accountable for it. So great balance for a teacher that actually cares for his students. Not to much but enough that you see progress in learning how to play the guitar.
great teacher
very relaxed atmosphere, very knowledgeable and friendly teacher. My playing is already improving.
Excellent teacher. We LOVE him!!
Beginning Guitar Student
Harold is knowledgeable and patient with very good teaching skills. His lesson plan is based upon a proven method. As students, we learn sight reading, chord theory and technique. He teaches instead of wasting our time showing his skills.
Awesome
Harold is great, very thorough & patient. My son is very happy & eager to go to his lessons each week. We plan on continuing the lessons for a while. Totally pleased with Harold...great teacher!
Far exceeded my expectations
Harold, in a few short lessons, has Brian reading music anbd playing rhythmically. He, and had taught the basics in a way that enabled him to continue forward at a faster pace.
Great Teacher
Harold is great, very patient and understanding, I've already made more headway than the last time I tried to learn guitar.
