The Songwriting courses at BYU teach students to write for the present day publishing industry with tools found in theory, form, content and style. A large end of the semester project was organizing, promoting and executing a Songwriter Showcase, featuring the top twenty songs written during the semester.
I started recording two years after I began writing. I have spent 100+ hours in studios in California, Colorado and Utah. I have recorded my own music as well as worked on projects for other writers and producers. You can hear me on the 2012 EFY CD here.
My first song was called "Apricots and Blueberry Jam." Odd title, decent song and the start of my love affair with songwriting. Since that fateful day, I have written over 300 songs and have learned the art and craft of writing music!
As a student at BYU I have been surrounded by a plethora of talented individuals. It has been painful to see so many of them hungry for opportunity but simply not knowing where to look. In 2012 I was the Vice President of an on campus club called Footlights that worked to help musicians. But the reality was that in order to have successful musicians we needed to be collaborating with people in business, film, graphic design etc. So I approached the club presidency and suggested a complete makeover. I wanted a creative space for anyone who was interested in music and wanted to work within the industry. And Ta-da! "The Music Business Club" was born.
