I love music and have been playing music since I was a small child. And I love helping to spread the joy of music by teaching. I have been teaching fiddle for over 20 years. I specialize in teaching fiddle and especially Irish fiddle, but I also teach many other fiddle styles including Gypsy Jazz , Old Time and bluegrass as well as guitar. I first learned to play the violin and guitar when I was about 10 years old and also studied clarinet and bassoon. I really enjoy helping others learn to play and enjoy music. Whether you are young or old, you can learn to play and improve your skills and expand your musical horizons. I specialize in helping students learn practice and listening techniques that will allow you to make faster more efficient progress as well as increase your understanding of music and how you best learn to play. To help you stay motivated , I will provide weekly assignments as well as custom recordings and music or tablature of your assigned pieces so that you can learn to learn by ear while also having a visual reference. In addition to being a fiddler I play the guitar, piano, bass, wind instruments and many kinds of both fretted and bowed string instruments.. My musical interests are far ranging and include everything from traditional Irish music to classical, jazz, American folk and popular styles. I have found that by learning to play many instruments and styles has enriched my understanding of music and that each thing I learn informs me about many other areas. I try to bring this broad understanding to my teaching and to give the student the benefit of this broad perspective. My interest in traditional Irish fiddling began about thirty years ago and I have visited Ireland over 20 times to study with many of the masters of Irish fiddling. I have been playing professionally for over 40 years and have founded several successful bands including the popular Celtic band Beyond The Pale, The Aisling String Trio, and the Americana duo, McLeod Nine and played fiddle in the popular Gypsy Jazz group The Texas Gypsies. I am also a recording engineer and specialize in recording acoustic music of all kinds.
