I am an experienced performer and teacher with 20 years experience on my instrument. I specialize in non-traditional forms of improvised music and classical music, but teach all genres. My lessons are individually catered to students of all ages and learning abilities to keep their interest heightened and meet their needs. I assist students in building a strong musical foundation through proper technique, note-reading, and music theory along with ear training, listening and memorization.
About Erica M.

As a classically trained cellist with more than 20 years experience and a nontraditional musical background in audio, experimental music, and jazz, I employ a variety of techniques in teaching my students in ways that are both traditional and nontraditional. Although cello is traditionally a classical instrument, I also teach other genres and find joy in following the interests of my students. I aim to remove the pressures of virtuosity and perfection, and instead assist my students in learning through an individualized approach. While I believe in creating a strong foundation through mastery of technique, I believe even more strongly that all students are capable of learning in an environment when it is made to be individually accessible. I encourage my students to explore musical and creative boundaries through composition, improvisation, and experimentation. As a performing cellist, I have performed at many highly esteemed local venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Garfield Park Conservatory, Constellation, and Elastic Arts. I frequently work in collaboration with teaching composers at Northwestern University and DePaul University. I have also toured with the Emmy Award winning performance collective, Manual Cinema.

I started 10 months ago and have advanced quickly! Erica is very accommodating with my frantic schedule and supportive of whatever I want to work on. I'm excited to continue my lessons and grow as a musician.
