Eric has decades of experience as an educator, composer, music theorist, public lecturer, arranger, orchestrator, producer, music copyist, editor, and author. He has served on the faculties of several top music preparatory schools, colleges, and conservatories, and has taught students of all ages. Particular areas of strength include lessons and tutoring in music theory, musicology (music history), analysis, solfège (fixed- or movable-do), dictation, test preparation, and popular music.

About Eric C.

I teach lessons and courses in music theory, composition, musicology, and related fields. I am an active composer (ASCAP), arranger, and public lecturer, among many other hats I wear.

My approach to teaching is to create a relaxed, fun, and conversational atmosphere for the students, meet each student at their level, and work towards helping them reach their musical goals and expand their musical horizons.

I started tutoring while still an undergraduate at Mannes College of Music, and began serving on my first faculty position before I graduated. I am currently on the faculties at Queens College (CUNY)—where I was awarded the college's "Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching"—and Mannes College of Music's Preparatory Division. I have also served as a music theory department head at various institutions.

I hold degrees from the University at Buffalo (Ph.D.), Queens College (M.A.), and Mannes College of Music (B.M.).
I received the "Graduating Master's Award" from Queens College.

I have given dozens of public lectures on a wide range of subjects, including: "Sophisticated Pop Music," "Rachmaninoff's Choral Music," "Bach and the Art of Imitation," "Do You Know What You Like About Music?" "The Music of Florence Price," "Schubert's 'Erlkönig'," "Bartók's Chamber Music," and "Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Yeomen of the Guard'," among many others.

I've given lecture-series courses on Mahler, Program and Incidental Music of the 19th century, Beethoven's Symphonies, and American Masters of Song. I have conducted seminar courses on the Music of Pete Townshend, British Rock Music of the 1960s, and Led Zeppelin.

I would be delighted to join you on your musical journey and share the joy that music, and music study, brings.

Dr. C has the unique ability to make his lessons fun and profound. As someone who didn’t have a formal classical music background, he has consistently encouraged me and has intensified my creativity and curiosity by exposing me to music and ideas that are now indispensable to me. He is passionate, funny, witty, and undoubtedly the most valuable instructor I’ve ever had.

Dr. C. is a longtime trusted colleague with a sterling resume and excellent reputation among his students at both Queens College and Mannes College. Having taught a good number of his former students, I can attest to both the preparation they received from him but their respect and admiration they hold. Much Recommended.

Dr. Eric C. is one of the most influential people in my life, and I have the honor of being coached by him. His attention to detail, intuition as a coach, and professor is truly one that is unmatched. He has the ability to show you something in a different light, which opens
up doors for you that you didn't know existed before. With his guidance, compassion, complete joy of this art form, and incredible knowledge, I was able to perform very difficult pieces. He always works diligently,
to ensure that no stone is left unturned, and every detail of the music is conveyed in how it is intended.

Any questions I have are always met with the utmost clarity. I appreciate greatly that he takes the time to ensure I understand the “why" of what I'm learning. He has a remarkable way knowing how to break
things down in a way that I always remember and am able to process, which has helped me immensely. My knowledge and understanding is always
expanding because of him. During my undergrad at the Aaron Copland School of Music, he was my theory and ear training professor. He goes above and beyond for all of his students and will always make sure that
they understand every detail in what they are learning. Any fears I ever had in learning the "challenging" concepts of music have been taken away
because of him, and now I welcome the challenges that come my way.

He has taught me how to truly listen to music, and dive into the depths of it, which in turn has given me an appreciation of this art form that can only be explained as transcendent. No matter how much knowledge I
acquire on my path as a musician, I will forever be in total awe of this art form. My gratitude for him is immense. "Before anything, you are a
musician first."-Dr. C.

Eric is an above and beyond instructor! I have taken many music theory/ear training lessons with him, and by far he is the most thorough and consistent teacher I know. Don't take this to mean laborious and stiff, because Eric is anything but -- rather, he effortlessly determines your skill level and needs, and introduces new information with an encouraging and understanding levity, making even the most challenging lessons feel natural and enjoyable. This is an especially important element in teaching dictation -- the practice of writing what you hear -- because a student at ease is more able to actually hear and analyze what's being played. His method is second to none, designed in such a way as to expand the student's long-term listening skills while incorporating elements from theory/analysis in the process, which builds both flexible attention and a deep knowledge that carries over into my other musical activities. I've also attended some of his "Ungeeking Music" seminars, and they are unfathomably fun -- the way he makes a closer relationship with music accessible to both experts, us self-proclaimed geeks, and audience members alike is remarkable. Wherever you are in your musical journey, you cannot go wrong in choosing Eric to guide you!

Dr. C has been my son's music theory teacher, both privately and through Mannes Pre-College, for the last two years. In addition to his expertise, deep and consummate musicianship, dedication and support of my son's musical endeavors (both in and out of the classroom), he conveys a genuine passion for all aspects of music that are contagious, and that have served to inspire my son's development immeasurably. He is the first to come to mind when recommending a teacher, be it for adults or young people.

Dr. C was my professor at Queens College for three different music theory courses, and I can say without a doubt that he is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Dr. C takes the time to help his students in class and after hours, and he works hard to make sure everyone understands the material completely. His music theory concepts and teachings make the subject material easy to comprehend, not to mention his wonderful sense of humor that makes you enjoy what you’re learning even more. Dr. C is a well-rounded musician, composer, and arranger with a wide knowledge of all-things music related - I cannot recommend him enough as a teacher!
