I am an avid teacher and have played violin for the past 20 years. I have performed in prestigious ensembles such as the Eastman School of Music Philharmonia and the National Orchestral Institute. I hold a B.M. in Music Education and a Master's in Music Theory. As an instructor, I will help you build a solid foundation in theory and ear training as well as violin technique, and can foster your development as a holistic musician. I have experience teaching all levels of violin (beginner-advanced) in both private and group classes, and am able to cater my teaching to your specific needs and abilities. Let's make music together!

About Emily K.

I offer online tutoring in Violin, Ear Training, and Music Theory. I am a multifaceted musician with a passion for music education, theory, performance, and the intersection of all three of those areas.

As a string teacher, I have taught at Centereach High School, Saint Mary’s School in Cortland, NY, the Northport Summer Music Program, and the NYSSSA School of Orchestral Studies. I also maintain a private studio of beginner-advanced students. I have experience with various teaching methodologies, including rote learning and the Suzuki method. I also have experience coaching chamber ensembles. As a violinist, I have performed in prestigious ensembles such as the Eastman School of Music Philharmonia, the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, and the GRAMMY-nominated National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic. No matter your age or ability level, I will cater my instruction to your specific needs and help you refine your string technique and musicianship.

As a music theory and aural skills instructor, I have taught classes at the Eastman School of Music, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the NYSSSA School of Orchestral Studies. I am also a published author in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and am a volunteer tutor on their website. I have experience teaching all levels of theory and aural skills, from fundamentals to post-tonal.

I had major performance anxiety surrounding tests and auditions. Emily was always very patient with me and knew the difference between my poor singing and when it was just my anxiety. She never made me feel bad about messing up and throughout the year I became so comfortable with her I only stuttered on really difficult sight singing. I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a teacher that is not only great at teaching but also incredibly considerate.

I had Emily as a TA for aural skills for 2 years and she worked with me both online and in person. Throughout my ear training, she was always supportive and patient with me as she helped me through all the material I struggled with. 10/10.

Emily is an amazing teacher! She made our Aural Skills section a supportive environment for learning and coming out of our comfort zones as musicians. Aural Skills can be a daunting subject to learn, but Emily's patience and clarification skills made the class enriching and fun!

She gave good advice and was very clear on how to fix my mistakes and what to work on to get better. It was easy to ask questions and set up meetings though email if I needed more help. All in all, a great instructor.

Emily is so kind and thorough with her teaching; I had a great experience in college when she taught aural skills. She makes the time for individual help and is very supportive! She makes sure you understand the concepts really well and she is an amazing person in general, outside of class.

Emily was a wonderful, insightful, and energetic chamber music coach at NYSSSA. She taught me a lot about being connected with the other members of the ensemble and understanding the true meaning behind the music we were playing. Emily was always so kind, approachable, and filled with positive energy. I would love to have another teacher and chamber coach like her!
