Building a positive learning environment is at the very core of my teaching philosophy. The lesson and the practice room are the times to make mistakes and learn how to reach your fullest potential! I offer well-rounded lessons, focusing on basic music theory, technique, expressive playing, and developing an understanding of why we make mistakes while practicing. My lessons can cover everything from the very basics to orchestral excerpts/audition preparation. Let’s get started!

About Emily A.

I am a professional flutist living in the Hudson Valley. I received my Bachelor’s degree in flute performance from SUNY Fredonia in 2016, and my Master’s degree in flute performance from SUNY Purchase in 2019. I’m currently working on my Artist Diploma, which I will receive from SUNY Purchase in May of 2020. As a lover of contemporary music, I’ve had the honor to perform in masterclasses for Ian Clarke and Gary Schocker — two world-class flutists and composers. I have a special interest in chamber music, which led me to perform with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra during my undergraduate career. I am also a member of the Kinane Trio, a Stonybrook NY based group that performs contemporary chamber works around the metropolitan area.

I began teaching students as a Junior in high school, and it’s always been a passion of mine. My first priority is always to establish comfort and confidence in my students. I want my lessons to be a place my students feel comfortable making mistakes! After all, it’s through those mistakes that we learn and grow as musicians. My second priority, of course, is all the other tricky stuff that goes into being a musician. My students will learn basic music theory (from how to read music to understanding chords), rhythm, technique, sight-reading, and musicality. While the majority of my work is in performing contemporary music, I teach in a variety of styles — from baroque and classical music to romantic and 20th century music. I’m looking forward to meeting you and learning with you!

Emily is a patient, thoughtful, considerate, and empathetic teacher.

I enjoyed our time together, practicing and learning a difficult and abstract instrument/subject was fun and engaging.

Highly recommend Emily to anyone willing to learn the flute! Thanks for everything Emily!

Emily is quite possibly the best teacher I've had. She is generous with her time while teaching. Emily is also very patient when working with me on difficult passages of music. She is creative at problem solving issues with my playing and has been very helpful in getting my playing to the next level. Anyone who wants to learn the flute, whether it's to improve their classical playing, or because they were inspired to learn because of the recent popularity of Lizzo, they should contact Emily for all flute needs!
