I approach each student as a unique individual, each with varying strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. I do not endorse a “cookie-cutter” teaching style. Whether starting from scratch or joining the studio with previous experience, every student brings a rich and wide variety of abilities to the studio. Specifically, studies are broken down into physical aspects of flute playing (breathing, posture, and hand position), tone production, projection and color, facility/technique, phrasing and expression, piccolo techniques, orchestral excerpts, and a broad range of literature. Each lesson is structured on three basic components. The first is a conceptual approach. This requires musical demonstrations emphasizing creativity while also incorporating imaginative discussions on phrasing, colors, and artistry. Secondly, a cerebral or intellectual understanding of music in concrete terms is essential. There is a strong emphasis on musicology, theory (including rhythm and harmony), musical form, and structure. The final component is an emphasis on fundamentals. This includes exercises in tone control and expression, technical etudes, articulation drills, scales, increasing interval work, and arpeggios. During each lesson I try to incorporate the following objectives: tone, scales/arpeggios, etude(s), solo piece(s), and sight- reading through duets. Although each student will be expected to complete all assignments each week, not everything will be covered during the lesson.

Currently the Assistant Professor of Flute at Oral Roberts University and Instructor of Flute at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Dr. Elizabeth A. Potts has been playing the flute for over 27 years. She earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Flute Performance with a  Secondary Area in Music Theory from The University of North Texas in 2017 and has a Master of Music in Flute Performance from The University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. 
Besides teaching locally in the Tulsa area, she is also a member of The Lone Star Wind Orchestra under the director of Eugene M. Corporon and frequently performs with the Tulsa Symphony, Signature Symphony, Bartlesville Symphony, and Fort Smith Symphony. 
She is a member of the National Flute Association, Oklahoma Flute Society, and Texas Flute Society and is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
